Hi,

I've just got a Nexus 4 (this is the first time I ever own a smartphone, but I had to learn how to develop android applications before), and my friends are complaining that they cannot hear me well... with my old, very cheap, phone it seems to be much better ! Can one increase the volume of the microphone during a call ? I didn't see such an option in the settings :( For the moment I had to put my SIM card back in the old phone. I tried with the headset, but it seems little better. Furthermore, I am a little electrosensitive, so if I'm not using the headset, I like speaking at a few centimeters away from the phone, not have the phone pressed against my head.

Thanks

Hi All...

I just got my nexus 4 yesterday with stock android 4.2.2

It is not rooted

The in call speaker volume is very very low...

Also, the ring tone volume is very low..

Other than that I love my phone..

Please help..

Is there anyway to test the microphone to make sure it works correctly. Ifind I have to almost shout for people to hear me. I know it helps to point the bottom towards your mouth which is odd as their is a microphone on the top and bottom.

When I was recording my voicemail setup with t-mobile if I spoke into the top mic it recorded nothing only when I spoke into the bottom mic.

I am wondering if the top mic i not working. Anyone else have a problem with the volume when speaking.

I don't believe the top mic is meant to be used in that manner. It is part of the background noise suppression system.

You should hold the phone in the "normal" position with the speaker against your ear during the entire conversation. Do you have a case on your phone? If so, please remove the case and test again.

No case on YET.
So what you are saying is to hold the bottom/ back of the phone to your ear? I find this keeps the bottom MIc to far away from your mouth to work correctly. Best way I have found is to hold the phone flat with bottom facing my mouth.
Sound is more acceptable if I use the speaker phone.

His suggestion on how to hold the phone was pretty clear. Read it again.

[edit] : Oh wait I see your confusion... His suggestion to hold it in the "normal" position is what you want to do.

my sister just received her Nexus 4 last night and also is having this problem. Should she send it back for an exchange? or is this a problem pretty much everyone is having with the nexus.

My speaker is just fine, same with most everyone else I'd assume. So not too popular a problem

so weird. i do see it a lot here though, both her voice coming through, and other people's voice coming through the ear piece, she does better using the speaker phone. I'll tell her to send it back. here's hoping. : )

yay! this morning my sis texting me that her volume is working a-ok! Phew! I was feeling so bad cuz i told her she should get the phone. :D. I think it was actually her earpiece, not her mic, but anyway. Hope she doesn?t always have to do the volume up down trick, if it keeps happening I?ll tell her return, but hopefully all is good. : )

One thing about the earpiece: I find that the "sweetspot" is very small. That is, if I hold against my ear just so, I get great volume. But, if I move it just a few millimeters in any direction, the volume drop off is pretty dramatic.

I have noticed this with many phones over the years but the Nexus 4 is perhaps the worst in this regard.
