Microsoft office mobile - full version for free?

Opened the app and somewhere it asked me to log in to my Microsoft acct. My daughter has the Office license with, I think, 3 users, one of which is me. Was this necessary? 2nd question - when I launch the app in portrait mode there is a large box on the left with recent docs. On the right are 3 partial boxes that will launch each Excel, Word or Powerpoint. Anyone figure out how to fix this? No settings that I can find nor handles that I can drag.
