MicroUSB Cable fix for Captivate

So I've had a few problems with the MicroUSB port on 2 Captivates. The cables seem to fall out way too easy.

The problem is the recessed port. If you look closely, there's a ledge (piece of plastic) on the back side of the inside of the port. This tends to prohibit a snug connection because the rubber/plastic of the USB cable hits that edge before the metal (male) connector can fully seat into the metal (female) port.

Since I buy all of my cables from Monoprice I decided to experiment with a $.80 cable.

I took a razor blade and shaved the bottom side of my MicroUSB cable (the wide side) at an angle. By doing this my cable seats further into the port thus provided a snug and tighter connection.

Curious, does the OEM cable that came with it fit right or is just a thing with aftermarket?

The OEM cable that came with it is much thinner (rubber block housing the connector). So that's why it fits better then the other cables.

Either way that recessed port is a bad idea but at least I can easily mod my existing MicroUSB cables. :p

I happen to like the covered USB port, which necessitates a recessed configuration. I keep my phone in my pocket and my previous smart phones require constant USB port cleaning to keep lint and such out so that I can plug the phone in. The Captivate, so far, has not required a single cleaning.

I have not need a cleaning but I never close the cover and like you my phone is in my pockets

I've never had to worry about a "dirty" USB port in all my years with smartphones. I manage hundreds of Blackberry's and dirt/dust in ports has never been a problem.

And that door will not keep dust out even when closed.

I apologize for my English. Apparently, although my native tongue, my message wasn't written clearly enough.

I keep my phone(s) in my pants pocket. They get a lot of pocket lint in the tiny orifices of the phone, most notably the USB ports. When enough lint accumulates, it causes an issue. I can't attest to the amount of dust required to cause an issue, but it doesn't take much lint. For those who choose to use a less conspicuous "holster", or other gaudy externally mounted phone retention method, this lint problem would not be an issue. The door, most certainly, keeps lint out.

Congratulations on living a lint free life. Maybe I should sue Maytag, the manufacturer of my washer and dryer, for their ineffectiveness to completely remove all lint from my clothing during washing and subsequent drying.

Maytag washers suck but their dryers are great. LOL.

Here's a photo of what I did with a razor blade and about 10 seconds. Notice that the angle is around 45 degrees from the previous 90 degress.

Wow that is a huge micro-USB connector housing. None of the cables I have are anywhere near that thick, that includes two samsung, one nokia, and one more generic one.
