Minor software update on 10/23/14

Until this new update, if the phone was sitting face up on a level surface, and the screen was dark, and you had active display turned on, when you waved your hand a few inches above the proximity sensor (to the left of the earpiece), it would immediately turn on active display. Due to what I assume is a bug, this feature was lost with the new 23.3.24 update that added VoLTE.

Never knew that at all. So I guess it's no loss to me. Lol

This is from Verizon's website.

THE FOLLOWING IMPROVEMENTS HAVE BEEN MADE:

1. Prepares your device for the new Advanced Calling 1.0 feature now available from Verizon.

2. Bug Fixes on the Messaging Client to avoid sending duplicate messages

3. Improving user experience for the Visual Voice Mail Client Service

4. Improving the overall user experience in LRA Markets

I noticed this "RCS Service" in cached processes I've not seen before after the update but can't for sure say as my memory isn't great with if it was there before and the icon just changed.

Does anyone know if a factory reset would correct this? I cleared the cache and restarted my phone several times hoping that it would do something to fix it. Needless to say, nope. Love how updates fix bugs.

Whoopsy, I was inquiring to the fix for the active display hand gesture. I used to use it all the time and miss it.

I don't think so. I believe it will require another update from Moto. Perhaps it will be an app update from the Play Store, but I'd bet more on requiring another OTA. For something as unimportant as this, I doubt that they will go through the expense of carrier testing, soak testing, etc.

More info: apparently the wave behavior was a bug that wasn't supposed to be there, and the new OTA "fixed" it, at least according to this: https://forums.motorola.com/posts/fe26ceed34

I recall that this is a "featured" feature in the latest moto phones like the 14 moto x and the droid turbo. I remember seeing it highlighted in a promo video for one of those phones. I would bet there still might be a chance we Maxx users will get it with lollipop.

Maybe, but the 2014 X and the Turbo have infrared sensors that watch for a wave. Since the Droids were already doing this, it'd be nice if they added it back. I guess we'll see when we get 5.0.

Thank you for all the replies and link! I too remember this being advertised as a Maxx feature and not a bug. Anyway, hopefully 5.0 fixes it!! Ugh....

I'm pretty sure this issue could be fixed with an update to the Active Display app through the Play Store.

My wave feature never quit on my droid maxx after the update

I received the update last month. The past few weeks I've experienced abysmal battery life. Prior, I could easily go 24 hours with battery life to spare, even with WiFi, BT, and GPS all enabled. Now, I'm lucky to go 12 hours. There are no apps that appears at the top of the Battery use list, just Screen, Android OS, and Android System. I'd expect Screen to bit the highest consumption, but I'm wondering if these "fixes" they made, like correcting the Active Display hand gesture, caused higher, less efficient battery use. Any one have ideas?

Verizon wants me to restore, then try a warranty replacement, then an upgrade, but none of those really seem like they'll work, and I've only had the phone since January, why should I burn an upgrade on what is clearly a software issue (assuming I get through the first two suggestions)?

Thanks in advance for any thoughts you may have.

I think turning off the watch for hand gesture would have increased battery life, not reduced it. Since the 4.4.4 update, apparently the phone was watching for a wave of the hand past the proximity sensor. Now it no longer does. It seems to me that watching for the hand gesture would be worse for battery life than not watching.

Did you turn on Advanced Calling after the update? I have not, but I know that plenty of people have reported that this increased battery drain.

doogald: I have not turned on Advanced Calling. Just checked my account on Verizon's site and it's not enabled, so I presume that this service isn't doing anything on my phone.

Ultimately, I'd try a factory data reset, just to see if that improves things. It will help you decide if it's a battery problem with your handset or something else. Make sure to back up everything in storage, particularly photos and videos, custom ringtones, etc., as those will be wiped with the factory reset.

If the phone still has bad battery life, I'd also want to try the warranty replacement while you still have a warranty (it's 12 months, IIRC) before upgrading the phone. That just seems premature to me.

I'd also look at any homescreen widgets, to see if maybe they are updating too frequently.

However, I have some other ideas:

You can also try wiping the cache partition - many people report that this helps. But you can also try switching from the Dalvik runtime to the new ART runtime - I find performance is better, and some people get better battery life.

Instructions to wipe cache: https://motorola-global-portal.cust..._id/93895/p/30,6720,8697/kw/cache/action/auth

Wiping cache partition can take a while - 10 to 20 minutes for some people. Let it finish before manually restarting. I'd make sure that it was plugged in or well charged before you do this procedure, though.

Instructions to switch to ART:

  • Go to Settings / about phone
  • Scroll to the bottom, tap the build number about 10 times (it will tell you when you are a developer). This activates settings / developer options
  • Go into settings / developer options, and switch the "Select runtime" from Dalvik to ART
  • The phone will restart, which will take about 10 minutes or so to pre-compile your apps for the ART runtime

You can always switch back to Dalvik if that doesn't help much, or at all, or has issues with any apps on your phone. At this point, there shouldn't be many apps with ART problems.

One last tip that I read here. Every time you restart your phone, go into settings / apps. Swipe over to "All", then scroll down to "MotoCare". Tap that, wait for the screen to refresh the data size, and hit the "force stop" and "clear data" buttons. Maybe it's just my imagination, but whenever I remember to do this, I tend to get better battery life.

Anyway, what I'd suggest to do:

  • Do that MotoCare thing every time you restart the phone.
  • wipe cache partition. See if that helps.
  • If not, try switching to the ART runtime.
  • If that still doesn't help, try a factory data reset.
  • If that still doesn't help, go for the warranty replacement.

Good luck. i hope it works out well for you.
