Android Central Question

I have 8gb of internal space on this device. The system uses approx 4gb so we can assume i have 4gb of space to use.

I have 1gb of data and 1gb of free space... Wheres the other 2gb? It says im using 7 of 8gb but the numbers dont match up.

I tried using an app called diskusage and it only shows 2gb of space total, 1 of which is used. That i can confirm.

The only thing i can think of is...

I was clearing space just prior to this and hit a button called migrate data. I assumed this meant it would move it to my SD card, but instead tried to move that over here. As a result i ran out of space.

My guess is that as the process was interrupted the 2gb or so that tried to move over somehow got lost/mislabelled. Its on the interbal storage but shows as still on SD?

That may be completely rediculous, but i cant figure anything else out.

You can, but you'd be wrong.

Android uses storage space to store things it needs. Linux (the operating system that Android runs on) uses storage space for the things it needs. Some space is allocated for things like the IMEI of the phone and a few other things that need to be stored.

If you look at the phone's storage partitions (just like a hard drive), you'll find one named something like userdata. that's the space you have. (You can install a terminal app, then use the du command.

It says im using 7 of 8gb but the numbers dont match up.
They never will, because of hidden files, other partitions that don't show, etc.

I was clearing space just prior to this and hit a button called migrate data. I assumed this meant it would move it to my SD card
Don't put apps on the SD card. It's a bad idea for a few reasons, one is that it can destroy the card quickly (it depends on what part of which apps get moved), another is that if apps get deleted from the phone, but not from the card, or from the card but not from the phone, you have a huge problem. Apps in internal storage can't do that. (Since Linux was never designed to handle the situation of an app being deleted from one part of storage but not another - because that can't happen in Linux - it has no mechanism of dealing with the situation.)

My guess is that as the process was interrupted the 2gb or so that tried to move over somehow got lost/mislabelled. Its on the interbal storage but shows as still on SD?

No, as I said, you don't have a 4GB userdata partition. That's the "problem". You're assuming that you do, but you don't. Now you have something. Whether it's a problem or only an apparent problem is something that only someone with the phone in hand can tell.

What your saying makes sense. Not used to not having full access to whats what. Ive moved back everything i can to the SD that i remember being there before my oopsie. Vaguely remember there being over 2gb on it, now theres not. Mustve missed something, which makes more sense than what i thought before.
Cheers for the reply!
