Missing "More" (three dots) Icon

Hey everyone,

I just got a Galaxy S6 and I'm having trouble accessing the settings in some apps, e.g. Messenger. The three dots icon, providing more options, is not there. I read this and tried to activate it with the Assistant Menu, but it doesn't work, as the assistant menu won't show me any settings for the app.
How do I get access to change the app's settings?

if you swipe in from the left or right edge of the screen the menu pops in
