Missing / Removed Features / Apps in Lollipop

The Gmail app handles all email accounts very cleanly and has a widget as well. Its just a different system. We had to learn the first email app and now we learn another. Its progress. Progress means change and adapting to new things and ideas.

I for one am very happy with Lollipop. I like the look and the new apps. I don't care that the email app is replaced with Gmail. In KitKat I never used it as it was clunky. The new Gmail app and widget are clean and very easy to use and seamlessly incorporated all of my email accounts into one place. I am using a Nexus 5 and I have noticed a definite increase in battery life and the new battery saver mode is very helpful for those long overtime shifts. My only complaint is losing Gallery for Pictures. I don't like that the pics aren't listed immediately in their folders and I have to change to a different setting to view it like that. Also why does it place photos I delete into a trash making deleting them a two step process. Just make a prompt "are you sure?" And delete. Other than those couple things I think its a nice change. People complain because they haven't gotten used to the new interface or don't like change. Change is good. Progress is good. Adapt and learn. That is life.

Another way to say it is accept what you are fed and learn to like it.

But can it really be called progress when features are removed and it takes more actions to achieve the same results? I don't think so. I'm keeping Lollipop on my N5 for now, just to see where it goes, but I've gone back to Kit Kat on my N7. Lollipop was just awful on the N7, and nearly unusable. I understand that 5.0.2 fixes a lot of that, but I still prefer 4.4.4, 5.0.x is a step backwards.

I just bought a Nexus 6, which came with Lollipop. It's an "upgrade" from my HTC one with KitKat. There are certainly some features of Lollipop that leave me scratching my head, but I'm more disappointed with the deprecation of features that I thought were otherwise brilliant.

The Do No Disturb in Lollipop, for example, has been "dumbed down" so that, instead of giving us flexibility in our schedules, like normal humans, we're tied into a schedule for multiple days, but for the same time range every day. WTF Google? I used to have a DnD schedule in KitKat for Monday and Tuesday from 2:45 - 4:15 and on Thursday from 3:50 - 5:20. Not with Lollipoop, er, Lollipop.

In KitKat, having the ability to arrange the apps on my home screen based frequency of use was a Godsend. I loved that. I also loved that I could vertically scroll my home screen to get to less frequently used apps. I didn't use many additional panes, but it was nice to have for some other apps and widgets. I

In Lollipop, I can't find ANY way to sort the apps. In fact, not only can you not sort them, if you move one, you have to manually move another to fill in the space left empty. While I suppose that empty space was previously filled by the auto-sort, I still don't like having to fill that gap.

I suppose over time I'll forget what I used to have and get used to Lollipop, but it doesn't make for an easy or transition or a happy one.

@BradnerBoy - the features you are referring to - DND, arrange icons etc are not native to the Kitkat Android OS, but are custom features that HTC added as part of their sense overlay. When HTC comes out with Lollipop, these features "may" still be included.

I have a Samsung Galaxy S5 on Verizon and have mixed feelings about Lollipop. The battery life is inconsistent. Some days I leave work at 50% and some days at 20% with the same amount of usage. Then there is the lock screen! Took me a week to figure out that if notifications are on the lock screen, then Owner information isn't displayed, even with it checked in the settings. AND the little app icons that were formerly in the upper left corner of the lock screen have been replaced with the carrier name. I know what network I'm on - I pay the bill every month. What I would like to know is what the little blue light is telling me BEFORE I unlock the phone. If it's the SMS or email icon I need to unlock the phone right away, if it's the one for Trivia Crack, I can wait until a convenient time. :)

I still have both email apps running. How can I disable the stock email app? I didn't think we could. I would prefer to check only one email but since I got the phone it always had to have both running for some reason.

widgets, wallpapers and home screen settings options can be found if you press the menu (bottom left of phone) when you are on the home screen page.
For those who are still struggling.

I searched this forum mostly to check if one feature was retained before 'upgrading' from 4.4.4 to 5 on my note 4 but reading all your comments I think I'll leave it! The function I was looking for was the ability to hide apps in the app draw. I'm not sure if that was a kitkat function or one added by Samsung. From what I can see it's another useful thing that has been removed?

I HATE the lollipop update. The orange is awful and you can't change it! And it seems like a lot of the menu options have disappeared or are harder to find. I am also missing a ton of widgets and they no longer show in the widget menu. One of the most important one is my google calendar widget. VERY annoying. I wish I hadn't updated... I also dislike the notifications and I used the lock screen camera icon A LOT and now it's gone.

Worst... I wish Samsung had warned me before I updated what would go missing. I wouldn't have done it.

Actually, it's there. It's just changed. If you look at your contacts screen, look under the "Contacts" icon, you'll see an icon with two silhouettes; click on that.

Since my Lollipop update, my GPS (Google) has become less than useful. I didn't think it had anything to do with the OS, but it's started telling me of upcoming intersections when I'm already in them, or telling me my destination is on the right/left after I've gone a block beyond it, so I end up making a lot of U-turns. It was right on the money in most urban areas when I had KitKat. Thanks for this great thread. Most of my other questions have been answered here.
