MMS messages missing.

I've been using Handcent for awhile now. I usually don't delete my text messages from my girlfriend. I opened our conversation and went back to March and noticed that the MMS messages she sent me are now blank word bubbles. I had some pictures that I wanted to keep. Are they permanently lost? Any way to retrieve them?

I tried looking at them in the default messaging app and same thing. Empty word bubbles...
