Hi

I'm new to android, just tried to send a picture message(mms) and it said it couldn't send.switched on data switch/enabled and it sent.
but when i have this switched on it charges me.i thought android was smart-my old Nokia was old school and it didn't have these problems.

Any advice ?

MMS uses a data connection. If you do not have a data plan you will be charged whenever you use a data connection.

I know that-but why can't it just send MMS like my old phone?-thought they are called smart phones?-more like dumb to me

Because a picture sent uses data. I can't answer your question about what happened before other than maybe your carrier didn't know, but now they know you have a smartphone? Either get a small data plan or wait until in wifi range. Frankly, having a smartphone with no data plan is just plain dumb. You will never get to use the potential of the phone.

when i need the Web i'm mostly home.so why would i get on my phone to look at stuff when i have a big dell laptop?.all i want to know is why can't it send a MMS without having the data switched on.and i'm on prepay so having my data on 24.7 would eat my credit.

I'm on Orange/EE. I pay ?5.00-fish a month which entitles me to 50 MMS messages a month. Maybe you could look into that with your provider? Previously, with my Nokia, when I sent an MMS, I was charged for 2 texts. I agree though, smart phones do seem to have made a backward step with this network requirement for MMS. Incidentally, my son has an iPhone, and we use Whatsapp to exchange pictures between my Android stuff and his iPhone.
