Mobile Hotspot Shut Off

There's no "update" for this. They will just charge you if you continue to use it.

Was wondering when this thread would start from what I read about this "update" is that it will happen in the background and you will not be able to decline or approve the update. Of course it's all speculation on how the update will surface until it actually happens

Its controlled by a mobile hotspot promo internal feature code on our accounts. I'm sure they have it set to expire which will then revert the app to pull from standard service options instead of the promo.

First, let me say I know that Verizon reps are not always the most reliable sources. That said, I am one who wants to keep the hotspot after the free promotion, but am leaving on vacation in the morning on July 7th and that is when I'll really need the hotspot (at home I use my cable modem for internet access). So, I went to the local Verizon store yesterday to see if I could find out how this whole ending of the free promotion was going to work and see if I could go ahead and have the (paid) hotspot added to my account. I was told that since I already had the hotspot on my phone (free trial) they could NOT activate the paid version and I'd have to wait until the trial ended and it was cut off. The rep also told me that no one would be automatically charged for the hotspot after the promotion ended, but the service would simply be disabled and if you try and use it, you will get a message that the promotion has expired and to call Verizon if you want to activate it again (paid, of course). I asked if he could tell me exactly when (time) it would expire and he said there was no way to be sure since it had to be done to all the free accounts and could be done anytime throughout the day. So, I just need to keep checking throughout the day tomorrow by trying to connect through it until it tells me it ended and then call Verizon (*611) and have them activate it.

Great info bud, thanks for that.

Per the memo that all Verizon reps have access to, the free promotion will end July 7th, 2011.

If you want to continue your usage, you will be able provision the paid feature yourself via your phone.

Here are the facts:

If you have the $29.99 unlimited data package, then the self-provisioned hotspot will be $30 per month. This is not related to the tiered data prices, and can be removed. This is for 4G devices only.

You will not, I repeat, WILL NOT be automatically opted into the $30 per month add on. You have to open up the hotspot app, and clearly accept the add on charge before you can use the hotspot. If you (or your teenage son for example) do not wish to have this ability, you can call into Customer Care and have the self-provisioning ability blocked.

If you activate a new line after tomorrow, you will have to choose a dedicated MHS/MBBC + Data Package on the new tiered system, which start at $50 per month for 4GB of total data usage (which includes MHS *and* phone data).

Hmm. My Verizon is still showing the hotspot promo and not letting me make changes. Maybe tomorrow?
