Monkeywrench: FREE ReZound/RAZR vs. $300 Galaxy Nexus

I've been waiting a long time (as have the rest of you) for a Big Red Nexus. My wife is getting an early upgrade from Verizon to replace her FAILing LG Ally, so that has to be done over the phone with a VZW rep. Thus, no third party discounts so definitely waiting for the Nexus for that one.

However - I'll also be adding another line to our family plan and am ready to pull the trigger anytime. This new Amazon deal is really making this decision difficult. I'd like to get a Nexus with it as well so we can both have the same phone, but I don't know if it's $300 better.

RAZR - I love the size/form/hardware/build materials
ReZound - I love the screen, Beats headphones
G-Nex - Well, duh.

Things I'd miss out on not waiting for the G-Nex:

- NFC chip and it's possibilities
- Official AOSP upgrades (although I'm sure the ReZound will be cracked open and get CyanogenMod).

Thoughts? Is the G-Nex $300 (and a couple weeks of waiting) better than the ReZound/RAZR?

If I was adding a new line it would be really hard to pass up the $.01 for a RAZR or Rezound. Sure can do a lot with $300 this time of year. But would be very cool to be able to use the Beam with the wife, still $300 for Beam?

I know, right? This was a no-brainer when the ReZound was $199. Just get the G-Nexs.

And I guess it's not only Beam, but we'd be able to just get one car mount and both use it. Or, one desktop dock. Etc. It'd be easier to be homeland IT support for just one model of phone.

But......$300.

I am tempted to do something similar. My contract with VZW is up. I am tempted to switch to Sprint and get the Samsung Galaxy SII for $.01. I have always wanted the GS2, was really hoping it would come to VZW. I worry about a few things, though:

1) Sprint service is great in my home city, but not so great in places I travel to every year.
2) I would lose my unlimited data on VZW (but I would get unlimited for cheaper on Sprint).
3) Timing of ICS update for GS2. Knowing Samsung, it would probably be a while.
4) No LTE.

Decisions, decisions....

this is a no brainer if you are signing up for a new account. the deal isnt available for upgrade but if you are signing up for a new acct and seriously think the nexus is worth 300 more then either of these phones you have some issues.

as far as the amazon deal.. absolutely zero strings attached, I did it with my 2 fascinates and it saved me 400 dollars.. wish I could once again partake in probably the best deal online and get a penny phone.

I'm not sure if this is true with Amazon, but with VZW you can return the phone with in 30 days. Currently this is extended for the holidays until January 15th. You could by the Rezound or Razr and then trade it in for the GN when it comes out. If you were to get the phone through Amazon, I'm not sure why you couldn't walk into a store in a few days (hopefully...) and return the phone for the GN. Can someone confirm this?

It might be worth a try. Whats the worst thing that can happen, you get stuck with a free Razr or Rezound? If you got stuck with one and really hated it, or decide you really need the GN, you could try and sell the Razr or Rezound online.

I would get a rezound. It is going to have a big dev following and will get all kinds of roms and kernels and bootloader will be cracked open. Plus the screen on that phone is down right awesome and is very future proof with the specs it has.

If it was me, I would to see if the Galaxy Nexus is released for $0.01 on black friday. The sale is all the way through November 28th, Monday. You will be kicking yourself, if the Nexus is released on Amazon for a penny on the same day the Rezound is delivered. Waiting for 4-5 days out of a 2-year contract is nothing. It's a drop in the ocean.

If you still want the Rezound or Razr at that point, you can still pay $0.01, but at least you have 3 different options. You don't want buyer's remorse, if everybody else in the forum is buying it for a penny on release day.

Most likely it isn't going to be released until later so I would say go with one of the two that is on sale now. You do have the return window if the nexus came out.

That's a good point. What will Amazon be selling the G-Nex for when they are able to offer it? I guess I will check out the return/exchange policy on Amazon.

Question - are you able to port your number over from Sprint using Amazon?

I ported a number from Amazon, last month. You still got a week to buy the Rezound/Razr for a penny. No rush.

If the Rezound gets rooted to ICS soon it will tempt me. Probably not though because while I love music I have a MP3 player for music and I can set my own EQ. One prominent sound signature sounds like a gimmick but headphones would be nice.

No way I would leave LTE and unlimited data on Verizon. There is no going back to unlimited once you leave. Sprint in my areas doesn't work as good as Verizon so even if I didn't have unlimited it would be a no go here.

Nevermind. This idea has come and gone.

I had planned to add a new line via Amazon and get the $.01 phone.
Then after that phone is activated, switching it to my account and giving the new member my DInc2.

Just talked to Amazon and they WILL NOT allow this. They require having the new phone activated on the new account for 6-months.

F that.

Another advantage of waiting is the Amazon's 30 day return policy and the potential for a G-Nex exchange penny-pincher sale anytime up to Christmas.

If you order the Rezound/Razor on November 26th/27th, and the G-Nex is available by December 25th/26th(within 30 day period). you could do an exchange for only the cost of shipping back the Rezound/Razor.

Couldn't you port your number to Google Voice and route it to the $0.01 phone for 6 months?

I just saw this thread - I ordered a RAZR for my son and the $199.99 price from Amazon Wireless. I thought I was saving a c-note from the store. I just hung up with them and got a refund of $199.98 for the RAZR. Sure can't complain about a RAZR for a penny. Anyway, I asked about the Nexus and she indicated it would be about 7-10 days after official carrier release before they get them. Just relaying what was said.

Apparently a lot of us are in the same boat, as I am contemplating switching to Verizon from Sprint for the GNex and LTE plus better service where I work. But I'm curious is this their policy where I can exchange for just the price of shipping? If you have previous experience I would love some feedback or anyone else for that matter.

My main concern is moving to Verizon before the double amount of data for the same price ends. I want to make sure to take full advantage of that prior to it's expiration while also being able to get the GNex when available.

Thanks for the help everyone in advance.

I am in the same boat. The only thing keeping me from a .01 Razr is lack of Ice Cream Sandwich.

Is ICS worth the $300 difference, especially since Razr will also hey ICS upgrade. I think I'd go with Razr for that much difference.
