I believe tonite and tomorrow nite would be a.good time for some new camera experiments. we will be in a moon phase that will have the Moon closest to Earth its been in 18 yrs. and with good skies its too tempting for a space nut like me to pass up on idk bout any of u but ill post Sunday what i get. i havent really played w the stock camera or 360 ultimate yet.

The stock camera after Froyo is excellent. You might want to practice with it, especially with low light photography. But I would bet you will get some awesome photos!!

The app Vignette offers more options but I would still have to say the stock is very good.

Sounds great! Unfortunately i'm looking at gray rainy skies all weekend here in Nor Cal. Would love to see what you get though!

Super Moon coming tonight 7:50pm EDT. should be clear viewing in my area :D

+1 for a late-season torrential rainstorm for the next few days in Central Coast CA. No skies for a while and rain predicted for the coming week as well. Hope someone gets great shots! Be sure to post...

Under real low light like that you have to adjust the ISO settings to enhance dark shots and also it is wise to adjust the Exposure to get nice photos under that kind of lighting because the auto wont cut it. Even a regular camera usually need these settings modified to get a good shot under that kind of light.

thanks for the advice. good thing spring arrives in less than an hour plenty of time for experimenting

Totally agree with adjusting the ISO and Exposure to get these shots. So I am super surprised when I open the camera app under Liberty 1.5 and the ISO settings are gone from the stock camera. Did I just miss where it moved too? Sounds like I may need a new camera app.

Try to get something to hold the camera steady as well, they sell smartphone tripods that should help. As you reduce the ISO (on the stock camera, settings --> ISO equivalent sensitivity) to reduce the noise you increase the shutter time which increases hand shake. You may also want to try to underexpose the shot (settings --> exposure and set it to a negative number), otherwise you may blow out the moon (make it way too bright) and lose a lot of detail. Don't expect the first shot to be dead on, during this phase you'll need to switch to manual and learn how the X's camera works which means a lot of experimentation.

Frankly, this is one of the worst shots for smartphone cameras - high noise sensors, lenses with a field of view designed to be more wide angle. If you're really interested in photography getting a cheap DSLR may help out your camera phone technique as well. I wouldn't even attempt this sort of shot with my X since I have a Nikon D200 at my disposal (although the Nikon doesn't see much action for easier shots these days thanks to the X). For reference, and my setup for shots like these is equivalent of an 1800mm lens (400mm lens, 3x teleconverter, 1.5x DX sensor crop factor) on a Gitzo carbon fiber tripod with a Markins Titanium ballhead or a Wimberley gimbal head.

Moon Shot

Moon Shot: Not a GREAT photo but good enough for making a memory. Notice full moon almost dead center above the only balloon that is not lighted up. (Macon, GA Cherry Blossom Festival: Balloon Glow)

I really do not get impression they are wanting to use it for a photography class or anything, I think they just wants to see how well the Droid X camera may perform under different environments.

Nor do I, and those who don't care much about learning photography can use my first paragraph. Smartphone tripods are cheap and there are some DIY videos out there but they can really improve night shots - especially if the camera app you're using has a timer function.

On the other hand, learning photography will net you much better pictures with the Droid X and for the price of your next upgrade and a little effort you can get a used DSLR, for the $500 list price of the Droid X you can get a nice little starter kit with a new camera and a few lenses. The DSLR gives you a lot more tweaks and they're a lot easier to play with which means you learn things a lot faster than by fumbling through the menus in the camera app.

Just to show what's possible with a DSLR on a normal night (this was from 4 years ago - click for a bigger image):

I was looking at DSLR the past three weeks and just trying to decide as of right now which one to buy but DSLR has so many more options instead of point and shoots. That other night, I wish I has a DSLR to take some pictures on that clear night. Oh well.

I was just wanting to try out the camera on my X for that special occasion. Didn't know I would run into a photography nut lol. I am in no way that interested in photography to spend money on advanced cameras and such, nor a tripod for my phone, lol. It was purely for fun to see how they would turn out. I'll get better with it over time. Lota nice warm clear, moonlit nights still await us.
