The 801 is better if power is what you are after. The Octacore on the 616 isn't using all cores at the same time. It's using 4 cores at a time. The faster cores for more intensive tasks, then the slower cores when idling. Hence, the 616 is always slower than the 801. The 801 is also using a faster dual channel bus to the RAM, which makes swapping (loading stuff to RAM) faster. However, the 801 eats more battery because it's always using the more powerful cores even for low power stuff. The 616 is also using the A53 cores, which are prone to heat up on prolonged usage at max power, which will throttle the speeds. The Adreno 330 is also higher clocked than the 405 for better processing, but the 405 can render pixels faster.
