Moto Atrix: What Do You Think?

As for the cameras while the rear 5MP may be good enough for a quick pic it's the VGA FFC that I feel is rather under spec'd considering so many other things on this handset are frontrunners in their respective categories.

Do you really want your loved ones to see your facial blemishes up close?

Besides, 640x480 realtime streaming is already taxing on a wireless network. I don't think 1.3+ MP would be very smooth. Remember that with video chats- the video not only has to go both ways, but uploading is usually the bottleneck. Just because you can stream an HD youtube video just fine doesn't mean your network can handle upstreaming HD video. Even my 30mbps/2mbps cable connection would have trouble.

All good points, especially the first one! :p

I think the FFC will do just fine; besides, for all the people begging for manufacturers to put them in, how many people actually use them all that much? That being said, I may get the Atrix and find myself using it all the time! I've never had a phone with one, so I guess I cant really say

the i*hone has a VGA FFC and no one really complains about it. I mean why waste valuable space in the device design for a possibly larger more megapixelated camera instead of optimizing the rest of the device?

Not even 10% of the people use a FFC on a regular basis. I'm more on the side of function and form utility over spec-queen

my $0.02

I prefer spec-wh0r3 thank you :p
Having been a former Architecture student and since then been 18 years in IT I understand the form/function relationship quite well, thank you.
The quality of the lens would most likely fit in the same space, evidence the 2MP FFC in the LG Optimus Black and the many 1.3MP examples now pouring out. While you can make up a statistic saying who uses what it's still a feature I would like to use quite a bit moving forward hence why I place emphasis on it. I also believe the adoption rate is slow due to other limitations like readily available, well performing, cross platform clients. I hope the recent acquisition of Qik by Skype helps this along.

I live off of remote IT administration, Infrastructure Architecture actually. Running multiple RDP sessions makes you quickly realize this as well as a solid background in networking and simple logic analyzing bandwidth utilization.
PS I have few blemishes :p

My main point with the hardware in general, the rear and FFC as examples we're currently discussing, is I'd like to get the most future proof piece of kit I can and I consider these important moving forward even if they're not prevalent in our current mobile landscape. If others don't then by all means get what suits you. I may hold out though unlikely as patience is not a virtue of mine.

All good points...each individual needs to evaluate which hardware will work best for them. And I hear you regarding "future proof" :p ; seems most Android phones are current only for a month or two! (Apple, current for a year, BB, outdated before they're released! And I can talk, I've owned both!
That's why I'm leaning toward the Atrix; I've got to have something now (as my current hardware is fritzing), and the Atrix seems to be the most advanced out there, not to mention the only Android on ATT worth getting.

And no, patience doesn't come very easy over here either! Can't wait for my W2, so I can get my refund and get the Atrix!

Agreed! I'm currently switching between personal BB 9700 and iPhone 3G suffering on both. Work: BB 9550 about to get switched to 9670. I used a few Android handsets extensively so I know it's the platform I want moving forward, simply too feature rich to ignore. I do think the Atrix will be it for me but holding out for MWC and CTIA to see what else will be shortly available. I too am on ATT and love their network in my area so the Atrix looks to be the winner for now.

I'm glad to hear that ATT seems solid in South FL. Here in central FL, their network is considered 3rd ranked (out of 4). I had only 3 phone calls this evening, 2 of which were dropped. This is a common occurrence for me. These problems aren't device-specific either.

However, I'm sticking with them. I'm grandfathered on the unlimited and nearly everyone one I know is on ATT, so I never use any minutes. And Verizon has screwed me before...

Yikes, sorry to hear!
In my travels to Orlando and Tampa I haven't had issues but those are limited samples. Overall I think iPhone antennae are not as good as BB antennae, in my experience. The Android phones I've used have been TMo models on ATT so I can't comment really.
I have had ATT since the Cingular days in 1995 and they have been solid for me. In the meantime I have had work supplied phones from VZW and Sprint, not noticed any better signal strength and not had the ability to do SVDO which is something I use all the time. I also spent time on TMo in 2009 trying out the UMA feature but had to switch since their network for me just didn't have the coverage I needed, they even let me out of my contract with no ETF.
Right now I'm waiting for an amazing Android phone to come to ATT so I can use my grandfathered unlimited data plan to the fullest /bwahahaha :evil grin:

I think I'm getting too antsy waiting to make the jump...as evidenced by the lock screen and home screen of my 3gs

I'm very tempted to switch over from T-Mobile to ATT just for this phone. I wonder how many people will jump boat for this amazing device. I played with it a bit at the CES and it is quite amazing.

My reservation with that for you would be no unlimited data plan being offered by ATT to new subscribers. Food for thought, you know your usage patterns but I would think even current usage would spike with this device though that's just speculation with a pinch of a hunch thrown in.

I thought about it but in the end its not worth switching for one phone. I love T-Mobile because they have the best pricing and my plan is grandfathered so it's even cheaper and I don't have any data caps.

If T-Mobile gets the optimus 2x there's no real point to switch.
