When I try to go to my contacts list and try to customize a ringtone it brings up a ringtone list, I choose one, I click OK, but it's still the default ringtone. What's weird is when I do this it changes the FIRST contact to the custom ringtone. That's the only one I can change... the first contact.

I did try to make my desired contact the first one, but that didn't work. "ACE DENTAL" is the only ringtone I can customize.
Wtf???

Welcome to Android Central forums. Thanks for telling us what device you have. What app are you using? It may say Contacts, but Google Contacts appears as Contacts, Motorola's Contacts app may be just named Contacts as well. Looking online it looks like Moto's may be orange while Google's is Blue.

What I believe is happening is you are changing it in the wrong app. Both apps will have the same contacts, in the same order, which is why Ace is first and appears to be the only one getting changed but this will depend on your answer to the next question.

How are you changing the ringtone? Please describe, step by step, how you are changing the ringtone.

Things you can try would be to change the ringtone in both apps, one at a time, and test to see which, if either, is responsible for the ringtone you're hearing. That may be all you need but if you still have issues let us know and we'll go from there. Please include answers to my questions in your reply.

I'm trying to change it in the phone app that came with this phone. I don't know another app where I could change ringtones. There are two ways to change ringtones in the phone app - thru contacts and thru settings - but they both do the same thing:

I press the phone app
I press contacts
I press the desired contact
I press contract ringtone
A list comes up of different ringtones
I press the desired ringtone
I press OK

That should change the ringtone on my desired contact but it doesn't. Instead it changes the ringtone on ACE DENTAL.

I really don't understand what you mean when you say I could be changing the ringtones in the wrong app.

I think what @VidJunky means is sometimes some phone OEMs have both the Google Contacts app (which is part of the Google Apps package when installing a ROM) and the OEM may have their own version. For instance, there was a while when Samsung used to have both their Contact app and Google's.

Do you have more than one Contacts application?
EDIT: Welcome to the forums.

No I don't have a Google Contacts App. I looked up Google Contacts and it's small subset of contacts I have on the phone, and it doesn't have ACE DENTAL, and I see no ringtones on it.

The easiest way to figure out which contacts apps you have it to open your app drawer and scroll down to the Cs if you're using alphanumeric sorting and see how many apps you have named Contacts. Most OEMs and Google just call their apps what they are. Contacts, not Google Contacts, Browser, not Samsung Browser and so on.

Anyway, let's look at your method. Opening the Phone app>Contacts>open the drop down menu, do you have the option to View by storage location? This will show you where your contacts are stored and how many locations you're using and Moto may include other information. As you can see I'm only using Google Contacts.

So after following your method, of going through the phone app to access these contacts, I found a few odd things. Not all of my contacts show up in this list. I get a few more opening the Contacts app. I think this may just be a me thing, but now that I've noticed I will have to figure out why, but in the meantime, the only thing I can think of for you would be that the phone app is not able to edit the storage location of the contact you're wanting to edit.

My testing also brought up some questions.
When you edit the ringtone, for me it shows this customization in the contact details, so if I picked Moon Dust, it says Ringtone Moon Dust under contact settings, then when I check my Contacts app directly, it shows the same customization. Is this true for you with the contact that fails to change?

So I found my Contacts App and tried to change from there, but it did the same thing. When I try to change a ringtone it fails to change the contact. But it does change ACE DENTAL.
