MOTO G5S Sleep/Awaken problem

Hoping someone can help with (what I think is) a sleep sensor problem. I have my G5S in a case which used to a) switch off the phone when the case was closed and b) switch it on again when the case was opened. It has stopped doing this. Is there something I could have fiddled with to cause this change, or is it a physical thing e.g. sleep sensor has broken?

Do you have Moto Display enabled?

In Moto Display, there are three options - Night Display, Attentive Display and Peek Display. All are OFF, but I have never had them on.

Enable Peek Display, close the flip cover for 10 seconds and see if it works.

Well, the strangest thing.
I tried this suggestion but it didn't work. Then, last night, I picked up my phone and opened the cover and the phone came on. Go figure.
So I'm happy enough with this 'solution' even though it won't switch off when the case is closed.
