Moto stock/extended battery causing signal problems

For the past few weeks, I've noticed that areas where I've previously had good cellular signal has degraded and I was blaming the phone and/or VZW. This morning, when I got up and checked my phone for new email, there wasn't any and my WiFi indicator was full strength and white, and I had no network connectivity. My iPad, on the same WiFi, had no problems.

So, in anticipation of going to the local store tomorrow to talk to someone and maybe exchange, when I got to work (where I've mostly been seeing the cellular problem), I swapped out the extended Moto battery (BH6X) for the one that came with, the BH5X and plugged it in to make sure it's fully charged. And instantly, my cellular signal strength recovered.

I've had this battery for about a year and I've only started seeing this as an actual problem about a month ago. I got the BH6X battery specifically because I've heard from others that the other extended batteries interfere with GPS and/or WiFi.

What could have happened to have caused an otherwise decent battery to suddenly cause reception problems?
