Okay first, sorry for the boring subjects in my photos, but the point is to show an idea of the differences with and without HDR enabled.

>> See Gallery <<
(Note: Photos with HDR enabled have the term "HDR" in the filename.)

If you view the photos at full size, you will see the shadow areas in HDR shots have less noises and with more details. Obviously this is a benefit from the phone taking multiple pictures with different level of exposure and using software manipulation to gain more details, but it doesn't matter, in the end getting a good looking photos is what matter, at least for most regular users like me who doesn't care about shooting RAW or doing advance photography. Actually, the skies exposure tend to look more correct with HDR as well.

HDR do not help with all situation and sometimes may overexpose scenes. Also you will need to hold the camera very still while taking HDR shots to prevent blur.

The point I'm trying to prove here is the quality of regular (nonHDR) shots could be a lot better and is better by several other 2014 flagship devices, however, the camera have a lot of potential. Just hoping Motorola can come with some updates to improve it.

Wow...no comparison! I haven't even tried the HDR setting in my new Moto, but I'm about to...It will be my setting of choice for now at least

Wow. There are big differences there. is there much of a time difference when taking HDR shots? Should probably leave mine in hdr mode permanently (when I get it)

Re: Comparison between HDR and nonHDR photos

I have HDR mode set to "Auto" on my 2013 Moto X.

The problem with HDR on all the time is that fast-moving subjects will be tough to capture.

Re: Comparison between HDR and nonHDR photos

pretty substantial differences
the hdr photos look great
neat shot with the limes

Re: Comparison between HDR and nonHDR photos

That shed comparison is like night and day. The normal shot is grainy and overblown, while the HDR shot is perfectly useable. The outdoor shots are a bit more of a mixed bag in my opinion; HDR mode seems to make the sky slightly warmer. As you said though, this suggests the camera's output could be improved with a software update. The sensor is definitely capable of better shots.

Re: Comparison between HDR and nonHDR photos

HUGE difference. I just set my on HDR as the default. Thanks!

Re: Comparison between HDR and nonHDR photos

The colors seem truer in the HDR shots. My faves are the picture of the limes and the last one with the cars in the parking lot. The non-HDR shot of the cars looks like a lot of pics I took with my 2013 Moto X - kind of grainy and muted.

Pro Capture works better for me. Faster and cleaner pictures. Haven't really messed with stock camera much yet.

At present, the Google Camera works far better than the stock camera. But I have supreme confidence that Moto will fix things with an update like they did with the OG X.

Cool thread. I did a couple today. Very unscientific and I'm not the steadiest hand in the crowd. But here ya go.

HDR mode is good for quick snapshots. If you're going for a specific look, you're better off using an app that lets you set separate focus and exposure points, then do your editing. It takes more time that way but you'll get better results with better lighting and exposure.

Camera FV-5 can do that, but nothing can manually adjust the ISO level right now.
