So I'm probably going to switch back to android in a month because I'm finding that my 6 plus just isn't doing it for me. It's not that I hate it, it's more that I just want to do a bit more with my device than what iOS can do. Also I'm tired of all the propriatary stuff that Apple does. So I'm more than likely going to be coming back to android in a months time and I need to figure out what device to get. And the Moto x was too on the list because of its price and being basically stock android. However, is the phone still worth getting even though it's a bit old now? Should it still get updates and perform well for the foreseeable future. It's just this phone I get needs to be around 400 dollars and be off contract and get updates. So I figured that fit the Moto perfectly.

Sounds like the moto x 2014 could be the one for you then. Still performs perfectly well in most areas as far as I'm concerned. Even though its specs may be slightly outdated now on paper, its still lightning quick due to the near stock android experience. The only gripe I've got is the sometimes dodgy camera. Everything else is great. Some people have issues with battery life but ive always been fine. Regarding updates, it seems that it will be receiving the lollipop 5.1 update any time now. Whether it will get Android M in the future is anyone's guess, but i would think it's possible.

Keep an eye out for sales as the release date of the 2015 approaches. You'll likely be able to get it for $350 or even less. Alternatively, I wouldn't expect the 2015 version to be near $400 until the cyber monday sale.

I sideloaded the PE 5.1 last night, and it performs wonderfully so far.

You might consider a Nexus 5. Pick up a nice used one and save some money, possibly set it aside towards a new Nexus when they come out late this year. You could then sell the N5 or keep it for a spare.

Or, just keep using the Nexus 5. It's still a fast phone. Mine is running 5.1.1 very nicely. And it definitely WILL get the Android M upgrade. The developer build has been released and it runs very well.

Android user since v1.0. Linux user since 2001.

Re: this phone still good?

Would the Moto x not have a chance at android M? I'd think it would be well supported

Re: this phone still good?

I mean, there isn't a better off contract option for the price is there?

I think this is what it comes down to. The moto x 2014 is good value for money. You get a nice phone with a good user experience for a reasonable price (relatively speaking) which is what makes it attractive to people who would maybe otherwise look at other phones.

With the Nexus 5 off the market (for now) and the promise of upcoming sales on the 14, I agree it's the best value on the market for a higher end phone.

Re: this phone still good?

I currently have a Droid Maxx on Verizon and just ordered a Moto X to take advantage of the Edge program discount. In my opinion, I'll be sacrificing a bit of battery life although the Maxx is down to 20% or less every day anyhow and I charge overnight no matter what.

I'd say go for an X or a Nexus 5 (I'd have a N5 if I could).

I would think the Moto x is a better phone though.

I'd still get a Moto X. Fast updates and great support. Not to mention some very nice software features!

Re: this phone still good?

When should there be sales?

Keep checking the Motorola website. Usually the tech websites (such as this illustrious one) will publicize Motorola's sales as well.

I think Motorola has an email sign up for notifications too.

Re: this phone still good?

I'm a little worried though that the 801 processor is getting old, considering we are already on 810.

Re: this phone still good?

Technically yes, it's getting older. But it doesn't mean that it is not a great performer. With pretty much stock android, I don't think you'll have any complaints in the performance area. Battery and camera may be a different story, coming from a 6 plus.

Well, I don't take pictures and I do have a external battery pack.
