Moto X - Is Everyone Happy with the new Kit Kat?

Re: Is Everyone Happy with the new Kit Kat?

Got a Moto Maker X (VZW) for my wife delivered last Wednesday and immediately did the 4.4 upgrade. It bricked the phone completely. Wouldn't even attempt to turn on the data radios (cellular or wifi) after the reboot. No amount of factory resets (from recovery or settings menu) would kick it back on. Took it to a VZW store and they gave up and said return to Motorola. Called Motorola and they gave up and gave me a replacement code. Turns out she wanted different colors anyway after she saw the final product, so we got a redo and the new one should be delivered today.

Super nervous about applying the 4.4 update for her. Also wondering about ways to bypass it, for now.

Re: Is Everyone Happy with the new Kit Kat?

did someone here say they wipe their partition with cash? ;-)

Re: Is Everyone Happy with the new Kit Kat?

Wiping your cache partition wont cause you to loose any call logs Or SmS history.

Unfortunately, it also won't stop choppy scrolling in Google+, Hangouts, Contacts, etc.
The actual phone is snappy as hell.

Can anyone confirm to me that they are not seeing choppy scrolling in apps?

Re: Is Everyone Happy with the new Kit Kat?

The lag I have been seeing is in scrolling. Mostly Google apps, but some others have choppy vertical scrolling. Is anyone else experiencing that?
If so, does wiping your cache partition fix that, or only other issues?
Does wiping your cache partition clear call logs or SMS history?

I was getting the lag for about a day or so after. It's fine now that the update has settled in.

I'm noticing that it's not everywhere. If I go into the People app, and look at all contacts (tiny pictures), it's smooth as silk. If I swipe over to Starred Contacts (larger pictures), it's choppy.

I never really understood how software could "settle in". If it is acting up there is definitely a cause. It's not like we're waiting for it to take off its coat and put slippers on.

Re: Is Everyone Happy with the new Kit Kat?

Wife's new Moto X came in today. After activation, it immediately starting downloading the update. I told her not to install it until after I had a chance to get some time to watch the process all the way through. She put it in her pocket for the next hour or so and when she took it out, it had already installed and restarted. The good news is that it worked this time!

No noticable lag or anything yet while configuring for her...

Re: Is Everyone Happy with the new Kit Kat?

I can't play videos anymore. VLC crashes immediately after loading any file. Other players are now choppy; I can't play files that were working before the update. Sucks that I seem to be the only one with this problem...

It's more than likely that your apps aren't optimized for 4.4 yet ..
It will take an update or two to get back on track.
This happens to some apps every time a firmware update is made.
Some of the app developers don't keep up to date.

Re: Is Everyone Happy with the new Kit Kat?

My apps have been extremely laggy, I can't use some of my everyday apps (not optimized yet), scrolling has been freezing, my keyboard freezes, lock screen lag, phone gets really warm. I should've waited instead of giving into the update pop up :/ Just one person's experience though.

Have you tried a factory reset?

I, too, experienced some battery draining problems at first. Everything else worked fine, though.
I'd get 8 hours of standby time and then it would need to be charged.

Here's what I did to fix it:

First, I did all the things Verizon and Motorola suggested like changing brightness, changing the timeout setting, don't use a lot of widgets, don't use live wallpaper, etc., but none of those ideas worked.

Turns out I had an e-mail account that I'd get a lot of mail in, but didn't check very often. When I'd do a manual sync, it would spend a lot of time syncing, and then I'd need to stop it manually, because it wouldn't finish syncing. I changed the sync setting to 1 hour instead of every 15 minutes (I am using the pre-installed e-mail app). Then I went to a computer and deleted over 600 messages, emptied the trash and unsubscribed to as much mail as I could.

In addition, I had 3 gmail accounts and I set the "Days of mail to sync" at 14 days in each of the three. Now my battery lasts two days, sometimes longer. It took a lot of experimenting/testing to figure it out, but I love Motorola products and knew it would be worth it to find what the real problem was. Just as a disclaimer, I don't work for Motorola or Google and am in no way affiliated with either one. Have had three Moto phones and love 'em, love 'em, love 'em. Hope this helps somebody out there in Android land.
