Moto X or M8

One of the main reasons I stuck with Moto this year is because I know Android L will arrive quickly and unmolested by a manufacturer skin.

I had a Moto X last year and have a One M8 now. I won't be getting the new Moto X for two reasons. 1) Battery life would be a pretty big downgrade from the One M8. 2) I can't take another AMOLED screen with wildly inaccurate colors. The M8 screen isn't exactly the most color accurate display, but it's a lot more accurate than the screen in the new Moto X. Motorola needs to offer a color calibrated setting for its AMOLED displays like Samsung does with their cinema mode. I know most people don't give a crap about how accurate a display is... They just want the colors to pop... But it's just something that's important to me.

I had the moto x 2013 and now have the m8. I live in a fringe area and the m8 struggles and fluctuates trying to hold 4g. The x was Far superior. Battery life, for me was also better on the x, although slightly. Probably going to return the m8 for the x 2014 or g3.

Yep, Motorola does great with signal reception. Just came from a G3, actually still have but was using an iPhone 5 while I was waiting for my Moto X. I like the G3, its a really good phone but signal reception is not as good as the iPhone and certainly not as good as the Moto X. Just food for thought since that's a concern for you.

I found the M8 too tall, too heavy, and too loaded with both carrier (AT&T) and HTC bloat. The top power button was a PITA. I went back to my 2013 Moto X. The 2014 X has a bigger screen than the M8 in a more ergonomic, better looking, and smaller package.

Bout to make a purchase today. I know I might get some biased answers based on the forum but I really can't decide. Please help!

M8 might be getting an update real soon. It will be called the M8 eye supposedly. Pics I have seen of the M8 eye is that the back might be plastic which is a turn off.

On another note, Motorola is supposedly releasing a Droid Turbo. That might be specific to Verizon. It will be better than the Moto X. The Droid Turbi should be released within the next couple of weeks. That could have an impact on the Moto X.

Also have you considered the LG G3? I do not see many negatives about that one.

With the exception of the bloat (99% of those apps can be disabled) those were reasons why I returned the M8 in exchange for the Moto X

I finally decided to go with the HTC M8. My reasons are not going to be everyones. Motorola makes the best radios. Well, possibly Blackberry is somewhat better, but not much. But the HTC radios are also pretty good. Boom sound is pointless if you ask me., At best, the phone sounds like a good 1970s transistor radio. The Moto sounds a little worse, but really who cares? The new X build quality is right up there with the M8. I am not a real fan of metalwork bodies - I prefer a well done plastic body. If you want to see a plastic body done right, go look at the Lumia Icon! But Moto decided they had to go with fashion over function. Which is OK - they did a good job of it. Earpiece sound (you know, for phone calls) is good on both phones. They are both comfortable in the hand, Everyone whines about how slippery the M8 is, but that's just overblown to give bloggers a nit to pick. It's not bad at all and if you get something like a Diztronic TPU case it's a complete non-issue. So, why did I choose the M8 over the X? The deciding factor was the display. My use for the phone is twofold - I call, and I read. LED/AMOLED displays are fine, and Moto makes good use of it with the notifications. But the LCD on the M8 is far easier on the eyes if you are reading as much as I do. I know there are companies like Samsung that allow you to adjust LED saturation, but it's really not as good even when given that control. I am not sure what it is, but I find LCD more comfortable to look at for a long time. So that was my decider. If you are not going to spend hours staring at the screen the LED display may be the way to go just for the clever on screen notifiers. In that case case the Moto may be the better pick. Truly they are both very fine phones and it's going to come down to what you use it for and how you like it in your hand. You won't find your answers here - you will have to look at them for yourself.

Nevertheless, there are negatives to the G3, at least some are being reported by the reviewers. The biggest negative, ironically, has to do with the display. While the display is supposedly extremely good (although the QHD isn't as big a deal as LG would have you believe since a) you really can't see it and b) there isn't much content available for it) it's also a drag on battery and on performance. Pushing all that video data takes power, both in terms of battery and bit crunching, and there are reports of stuttering. The M8 on the other hand is very smooth. So again, you need to look at the use you will put it to.

The M8 top power button is a non-issue. Set up gestures and all you have to do is pick up the phone and swipe up from the bottom - boom, it's awake. The rest of it is sort of true, although I don't find the size an issue.
