That's an amazing amount of dough for a cellphone. I know it's possible you didn't have an upgrade, but how do you, or anybody else here justify $450-500 if available on a contract? What is people's aversion to a contract? It seems like even with the ETF added to the subsidized price doesn't equal what many pay for this device without a contract

Nature of the biz I think. Some people want to change devices much more often or on their own schedule, rather than on a carrier's plan. Some have grandfathered plans that they want to keep and they're unaware of loopholes.

6-9 months after release many devices can be resold for a decent price. After that its much worse the longer that you wait. A 2 year old phone is worth very little.

To a point though.... If Verizon, AT&T and Sprint don't lower your fees when you are not on contract... You may as well use the loopholes and take their money for the subsidy.

Yes, I was not comparing signal or radios. Just the ear speaker loudness and clarity.

I'm currently on Verizon and have a grandfathered unlimited data plan plus a promotion that they ran for unlimited data + messaging for a great price. In order for me to keep both I have to buy my phone off contact and pay full price (unaware of any other ways around this). It sucks but it's a necessary evil IMO!

Plus I have the Dev Edition :P

Cool...but I can't imagine if you did the math that paying 3 times more for a device would outweigh losing your grandfathered plan. Who needs unlimited data anyway? Almost all plans have unlimited messaging now with upwards of 6GB of data. But no big deal..to each his own. I'm just trying to understand the logic of paying such a large amount for a phone

This. I do not wait for my upgrade to get a device. Like Nothingistrue said well taken care of phones can be sold for a decent price. I sell several phones a year and buy new ones. Just sold a 16GB Moto X and S4 Google Edition to buy the 32GB Moto X and Nexus 5.

I paid full price for the Moto X to avoid a contract but I am also on a prepaid plan. The $40 a month I save on my plan will almost pay for the phone in 12 months.

I buy and sell phones quite often. In the last five years I have had 25 phones. I almost always sell my current device to fund the next one. Buying off contract allows me to change phones and I always make more with the sell.

Well I get unlimited data with my current plan for $60/month. If i upgrade I have to take a share everything plan which at minimum is $80/month for 2gb... Plus my employee discount only applies to the voice/messaging portion of the plan ($50 of the $80 per month) whereas it applies to the full amount of my current plan.

I may not absolutely need unlimited data but it's nice not to have to worry. Trust me I tried all the options I could think of to buy the device on contact and this seemed the best. It will be nice to not have to wait 2 years to upgrade too :)
