OK, so now we have a 64 GB Pure Edition Moto X. Obviously, no carrier bloatware here, and I'm assuming no Motorola features here, unless I'm mistaken? So basically, it's a smaller, cheaper Nexus 6. Which would you get, if you were me? Good battery is one of the most important things on my list.

The Pure Edition Moto X has all of Moto's software on it, just no added carrier software. The Moto X easily blows through a normal day for average users (ymmv based on signal, apps, etc) - and for power users both can use the Turbo charger. My Nexus hasn't actually arrived yet, but most articles indicate that the Nexus gets better battery life of the two.

If battery is the deal, you should get the Turbo provided VZW has decent coverage where you are. While it's clunkier in hand than the X, you get the Moto features, a faster processor and a better screen. But the big deal is the battery. My understanding is that the X is OK, not stellar. You'd be stepping up from middle of the field to the best there is.

That said, I returned the Turbo for the N6. The 6 has the shape of the X and I am surprised at how comfortably that curved back fits my hand. It's nothing like the feel of the Note 4 or iPhone squared off boxes. The battery has been lasting me nearly 20 hours with 5 hours SOT for since the phone was a week old. I'm not big handed by any means, and the N didn't seem very large when I took it out of the box. And after a few minutes with it away from the Turbo, the smaller phone became claustrophobic.

Another factor is that with Lollipop, bloatware can be uninstalled.

Finally, I feel that if you are avoiding VZW because of their customer service, that's kinda biting your nose off to spite your face. You interact with your phone all the time, and deal with the battery daily. You only have to deal with VZW as a company a few times a year (hopefully). I know which I'd find more irritating.....

Let me add a thought. I've been following your posts about what phone to go with, and think we are very much alike. I was due for an upgrade and was waiting happily for the Turbo. The N6 started to grow on me, though, and I quibbled over which to get quite a lot while waiting for both phones to come out. The solution was obvious, but it took a few weeks to come to me: I got the Turbo from VZW and the N6 from the Play Store the same week.

Take advantage of the return period. Get one phone from Moto, the other from the Play Store. Try them side by side like I did. And keep the one that suits you best.

I slept much better once I figured it out, and you won't have to worry about the $35 VZW restock I paid to return the Turbo.

Thanks for the in-depth response. I'm actually on T-Mobile. I figured since the 64 GB variant of the Moto X is $50 cheaper than that of the Nexus 6, an acceptable battery life might have swung me towards it, because I'm quite intruiged by Motorola's features. I feel those are quite useful, as opposed to the gimmicks of TouchWiz. As of now, though, I'm waiting on the elusive 64 GB CW variant Nexus 6.

I am a heavy user, I either talk or listen to podcast via a Bluetooth headset for 5 hours a day, then have 3ish hours of screen on time, all while traveling around on LTE. If battery is your biggest concern, skip the X. I bought one and returned it. It is an amazing device and the perfect size, bit the battery didn't last past lunch time for me. The Nexus 6 gets me until the end of my work day.
If you are near a charger, the fast charging for the Moto X is nice, but I am not near a charger so that didn't help me. Again, I am a heavy user bit the difference in battery life is extreme to me.
But to level the playing field, ignoring the battery I would choose the Moto X all day long as it fit in my hand perfectly and I like the few Moto add ons.

Thank you. Exactly, I agree with you. The Moto features are done right; all useful, without the gimmicks. I don't use 95% of the features on my S3, because they're pointless to me. Although this has multiwindow which I would use, it's not as well implemented as it is on more recent devices.

With Motorola being rumored to release their own Nexus-like phablet in the coming months with improved specs, (although not much for specs except battery), my dream device would be a Pure Edition of that. That's a long way off, though.

I'm pretty much sold on the Nexus; the only concern I have about it would be the ability to repair it in case of a drop, since most third-party stores only seem to support repair of Apple and Samsung devices.

Get Moto Care. Problem solved.

It all depends which screen size is more to your liking. Personally, I like the bigger screen.

Oh yeah, after testing out a display model in an AT&T store, and then holding the Moto X next to it, definitely the Nexus 6.

The Moto X wins in standard user experience (meaning the non tech enthusiasts) by a long shot. It is a phenomenal device. My wife consistently uses Moto's add ons. But having gone Nexus 6 myself, I don't think I can ever go smaller.

I just don't understand why Motorola decided to release a 64GB variant now. Unless it was to be in direct competition with their own phone, and also to prep people for their own phablet later this year. It also begs the question, what will Motorola serve up in a Moto X 2015? I'd hope for at least a 2,850 mAh battery and a 5.5" screen, and of course, Lollipop out of the box.

I am also after the 64 GB CW Nexus... And I plan on purchasing it from the play store. I like the freedom to swap out carriers if Verizon becomes a problem. Also, if this rumored moto phablet comes to fruition, I won't be locked in a 2 year contract. I honestly can't see myself purchasing a subsidized phone ever again. T-Mobile has heavily tempted me but I'm still unsure of their network... I feel as though they may be in my future though!

Yes, the elusive 64 GB CW, that's the one I want as well. I actually wondered whether it was best to get it from the Play Store or from Motorola and what the difference was. Most on the forums have said Motorola, because of Moto Care. Then there's the issue of repair, and Motorola's Advanced Exchange program. There's a lot to consider. I wonder where Google stands in case someone needs their Nexus 6 repaired.

Well... the Moto X and Nexus 6 are two entirely different phones that appeal to different users, so an X with more storage won't that all that much since the majority of Nexus 6 owners have the 32G model in the first place (I view the two more like different models under the same name... like the S5 and Note 4). Why didn't they roll it out when they launched the X in the first place? That's a good question. If it wasn't due to some sort of hardware thing (limited supply of the 64G chips, etc) then my only explanation was that they were trying to double dip; sell the 32G then get some of those users to then sell their 32G unit to buy the 64 a little bit later.

I've had the Nexus 6 CW 64GB for a month now and I can't see myself going back to smaller. The battery life, larger screen for reading, and speakers are the most unique callouts for me which have kept me from going back to the Nexus 5. I'm biased to no bloatware and pure android experience as well.
I just bought my wife the moto x 32 GB for the hands free functionality. She has much smaller hands and she loves the feel as well as the OS (coming from S3). The moto features like driving and aware are not gimmicky; they're very useful and wish these apps were available on the nexus. I must say the OS on the Moto X is quite nice and doesn't feel like a barrier. Though the Qualcomm 2.0 chargers do eliminate battery concerns, I appreciate not having to plug in the N6 even with moderate use. With light usage the Moto X won't need a charge until next day though.
If the abovementioned three needs weren't as important to me, I would have definitely chosen the moto X or used as a backup.

That makes sense, and it's not a bad option for only $100 more.

I completely agree with all you've said. I have small hands myself, but after holding the Nexus, the battery, screen and the speakers are what sold me, not to mention pure Android. I'm also coming from a S3, so to have Android be as it was intended on a device really interests me. That being said I really like the features on the Moto X, and also wish they were on the Nexus.

Yep.... when the 6's pricing came out, people collectively lost their minds and howled at the thought of a $650 Nexus..... Yes, when compared to the price of the Nexus 5, yeah, I guess you would balk a bit. But that wouldn't be looking at things in the right context. When you compare this phone not only to its competition (the Note 4 and iPhone 6+) as well as its closest 'sibling', the Moto X 2014..... the Nexus 6's price is precisely where you would expect a device of that nature to be.
