Moto X Style: Software updates?

Re: Software updates?

Did it even do this when trying to do the OTA over wifi?

Yes, data turned off, wifi only - still no update. Once that AT&T Sim was in the phone, either wait for AT&T to push it or pull the SIM, wipe the phone, reboot and get the update.

Re: Software updates?

Apple appears to be in control of their updates as to what their contracts stipulate we won't know, my guess it the clause is quite clear, your provide what we need or you don't sell the phone that makes you a lot of money.

Today the Android OEM's should be focused on design, features and function of their devices and leave the OS as it was meant and designed to be. IF they did that they would still sell a lot of phones, Samsung I suspect would sell even more if TW was not on it and if carrier bloat was not included. IF enough Android OEM's do what Moto is doing and push for the ability to sell direct to consumers with the carrier's Edge/Jump/Next (whatever Sprint's is) plans like Apple is able to do then they too could control their destiny.

I think you had some other issue. I've had nexus phones and a 2014 Moto X Pure Edition on AT&T and never had any issues getting updates pushed directly from Google/Motorola. All required WiFi but in no way did having an AT&T sim block me from receiving updates.

Re: Software updates?

If there isn't a carrier specific variant then the updates will come from Motorola. Which it sounds like the case here.

David Schuster did note in one his Android 5.1 Update posts that the second generation Pure Edition did go through some carrier labs.

Re: Software updates?

Clocks has pegged it.
Having AT&T I was getting pretty PO'ed seeing other people with carrier versions of the Nexus 6 get their updates before I was with my unlocked Nexus 6 w/AT&T Sim.
I also had to pull my AT&T Sim and factory reset to get updates when they became available. I would be very surprised if that wasn't the same with the Pure 2015.

Well it isn't the case with the Moto X 2014 Pure edition.

Re: Software updates?

I think that since these phones will NOT be sold by Verizon, then Verizon will not be in the way for updates. My reasoning is that Verizon probably WILL NOT help any Moto X Pure customer with any issues they may be having with their phones, but that it will be up to Motorola to provide any and all tech support. That leaves Verizon to only supply the network, collect their fees for whatever plan you may have, and free them from having anything else to do with the hardware or software running on the Moto X Pure. So Verizon will not have to approve any updates before they are pushed to the Moto X Pure. That's what I think!

Re: Software updates?

I never found Verizon's support to be of much help or support for that matter.

True but they can send you a replacement phone first and even send you another phone as a warranty replacement. Ymmv but it worked for me

It touches the network.

Version and any other carrier would want to be involved.
