Moto Z Play not getting voice message notifications showing on phone

If someone leaves me a voice massage I get a little icon on the top left of the screen but do not see the number (i.e. 1, 2, 3 etc) in the app box. When I go to open the voice mail it is not there. I have to refresh and then they show up. My wife has the same phone. We both received them at the same time from Verizon. Hers doesn't even show the small icon. We're been in touch with Verizon and they have not been able to fix. Anyome else with this problem?
