Hello everyone I just received yesterday the new Motorola Micro Power Pack (I will refer to it as the PP), and I thought I'd post my thoughts and impressions. There no longer appears to be an accessory subheading, so I'm posting here.

1. Ordered from the Motorola website and it arrived almost a week earlier than predicted, so that's a plus.

2. First impressions: Moto did a good job representing the PP's size in its website pictures; etc. It is exactly the size I expected. Build quality seems to be adequate overall (more below).

3. Setup was extremely simple and quick using the moto connect app. Interestingly, the literature says the PP can still ping the phone and vice a versa for up to a MONTH after the battery is depleted for charging. Obviously I'm not going to test that claim, but I can confirm that the ping feature works both ways after the battery will no longer charge the phone. This means that the 1580 mah battery (exterior labeled) is not entirely dedicated to charging or the battery is actually bigger than advertised. Over to ifixit to investigate. Needless to say the ping features work flawlessly. To ping your phone, double tap the sole button on the PP. To ping the PP go to the moto connect app on your phone. I haven't tested the maximum range, but i have confirmed that if you are out of bluetooth range and ping, it will ping until you are within range.

4. Build Quality: I ordered the royal blue version. The outer layer is a textured soft rubbery feel. I believe the gray and maybe black colors actually have a cloth exterior. One point of concern for me is the strength of the micro usb plug. When the PP is plugged into your phone it feels a little flimsy, as if it wouldn't take very much force at all to break off the plug. This would make me nervous about carrying the phone in my pocket with PP attached. I was nervous about the cap; it seems like an obvious point of failure because the key ring is on the cap and not on the PP. So far the cap is more than strong enough to hold the PP while on the key ring; time will tell if it will hold up. Other than those concerns the PP feels both solid and surprisingly light.

5. Charging performance: overall it does a good job. I've recorded some data from my first two charges:
Charge Time (in minutes) Phone Battery PP Battery
0 35% 90%
13 44% 75%
26 53% 50%
39 60% 50%
52 67% 25%
60 70% 0%

0 13% 100%
13 22% 75%
25 35% 50%
39 44% 25%
52 50% 0%

As you can see it takes about 1 hour to empty the PP. Doing so adds about 35-40% to a 1st gen Moto X. Interesting to note there are only a few "gates" for the PP charge indicator (view-able on the connect app.) 100%, 90%, 75%, 50%, 25% and 0%. Not a big deal for me, but be careful as a PP indicating 25% might in fact be closer to 0%.

6. Usage. My biggest before ordering concern was the size, as I don't like having bulky objects in my pockets. I can report that my fears were for the most part unfounded. I have pared down my keys to my car key, house key and the PP. I find that combination to be fine in my pocket. As mentioned before the PP is very light so I really don't notice it in my pocket. However, i do not wear tight pants so anyone hoping to shove this thing in a tight pocket might be uncomfortable. Also if you must carry more keys or fobs, this can add to their bulk.

Overall i recommend this to anyone as long as they are realistic about their expectations and usage. If you are always near a charger then the PP is superfluous. Don't buy it. However the PP is perfect for having some extra power in your pocket when you know you won't have a chance to sit near a wall plug for an hour, such as a night on the town. At the $40 price point it is perfect for such usage.

I have pictures, but not sure how to upload to this website.

Are you also using it as your Trusted Bluetooth device?

Funny thing about that. It's not viewable as a Bluetooth device under android/settings. It's only viewable in the connect app. So technically it is not a Bluetooth device much less trusted.

Functionally however, it serves the same end through the connect app; I've yet to enter my pin since I've paired the two.

so it does function as a Trusted Bluetooth Device, though not via the normal Bluetooth settings?

Correct

Hmm. That's not my experience with the power pack micro I just received.

Are you sure you don't have another trusted device connected?

At first I thought you were correct, but then I saw that my Pebble, which I had as a trusted Bluetooth device, was connected. As soon as I disabled the Pebble as a trusted device, the unlocked notification disappeared and more importantly I had to start entering my PIN to unlock the phone.

I'm definitely connected with the Connect app, I just pinged the phone to make sure.

You can see the Micro in bluetooth settings if you scan for devices, but you can't pair it with the phone because the PIN isn't given and the typical default PINs don't work.

Disappointing. Trusted BT was the primary reason I paid the rather pricey fee for the Micro.

It's been mentioned on the AC podcast by Andrew and Phil that it can be used a Trusted Bluetooth Device. Could you post screenshots of what it looks like connect in Motorola Connect and/or in the Trusted Bluetooth section of your phone?

Well, with all due respect to Andrew and Phil, they appear to be incorrect. Wouldn't be the first time. I'd love for someone to prove me wrong, but the only way to make it a Trusted BT Device would be to pair it with the phone through the regular BT pairing process. To pair it to the phone, you need a PIN, which they don't give you, and none of the simple 0000/1234-types work.

Attached are screenshots showing my Micro is attached to phone in Connect app, and my Trusted BT screen showing it's not an option to activate.

I'm using a 2013 Moto, so maybe it works as one in the 2014 models but not the 2013, in which case Andrew and Phil may have been correct, but perhaps should have been more specific. The MAIN reason I bought this thing was because of their comments that it could be a Trusted BT device.

I ordered a 2014 Moto X on 9/16, but those [language cleanup] at Motorola keep shifting shipment date later and later. It's gone from 9/26 to 10/3 to 10/13 and now to 10/17. If the darn thing does ever arrive, I'll test against it and report back later.

I purchased a Moto Hint as well, also assuming it would work with ALL features advertised on the 2013 models, after all, Motorola's advertising and website didn't say 2014 models only for full features, so perhaps it's just part of some pattern of vague compatability.

Finally received my 2014 Moto X, and will confirm that connecting a Power Pack Micro via the Connect app and without actual bluetooth pairing does indeed offer up the PP as a Trusted Bluetooth device. For whatever reason this feature is not (yet) enabled for the 2013 models.

Maybe the Android Lollipop update will bring better support.

Got my power pack micro today (black canvas). Easy pairing with Turbo thru Moto Connect app and it works flawless for BT trusted device thru app. It has excellent reverse location of either the Turbo or the PPM with audible ping as well as GPS location in app. (Requires High Accuracy location turned on)

This thing was a lot smaller than I expected, just a little bigger than a box of matches. It is well built and is easy to use with its single button operation and notification light. Don't forget it charges up any Micro USB device with 1500mah and can last a full month after its battery is drained to still locate your phone.

Moto makes things simple, durable elegant and functional. Highly recommend for all the features at just $40.

Actually Motorola's website DOES say 2014 models only for certain features....you just have to look for it...in the fine print.

If you look at the site (Sorry I don't have enough posts to post full links)

And scroll to the second panel, it reads:
In control without lifting a finger.
Pair with your Moto X and ask questions like, “What’s today’s forecast?” or “How do I get home?” and get answers directly in your ear. You can also hear notifications, make calls, and send messages without having to touch or look at your phone.*

Notice the asterisk? To find the note associated with that asterisk, scroll aaaalllllll the way down. And I mean down, past the specs and the links. To the very. bottom. of. the. page.
There's the fine print!
And the line marked by the single asterisk reads:
* Requires Moto Voice, only available on Moto X (2nd Gen.) and Droid Turbo.

So it's there, just buried at the very bottom, behind the asterisk.:-\

After several fails attempts. I was able to get the Power pack micro to work as a Bluetooth trusted device on Moto X 2013.
Un-pair the power pack..
Open Connect app. Note not press add device
Open menu ... 3 horizontal lines top left
Select settings
Select Bluetooth settings
Scan for devices... Press and hold button on power pack utill LED flashes blue. Mine took over a minute to find.
Connect! Back out of the menu.
It should show up in the connect app.
Now got to the security settings menu and it should be listed and just check that box.
Just got this working today so we'll have to see how well it works
Thanks

oooh! thanks! let us know. I await your update. : )

Well it works sometimes. The unlocked icon is always showing however sometimes I need to enter my PIN and sometimes I don't I cannot figure out why. It's great when it works so...
I found it works more often when you set the lock time "immediately after sleep".
