I can not think of a weirder one. Can you?

For those unfamiliar with Seaworld, Shamu was an orca whale.

Not weird at all...that's just the internal code name. Other Nexus devices have been Mako and Grouper in the past.....so why not a whale name for a giant phone.

Couldn't they have called it Orca?

It's like calling the Mako Jaws, or the Grouper Nemo. (Not the same species, but you get what I mean).

At first I thought it was Indian name...

Shammu with two Ms is a Hindi name actually.

Not sure where they got the name for the whale. Maybe from a Native American language?

Motorola is just a combo of "Motor" and the suffix "-ola" which was popular for audio products back in the day. They used Motor because they started off by inventing a car radio.

Yes, I did know all this stuff (after Googling it just now).

In the whale kingdom, orcas really aren't that big!

Ahem, technically Orcas aren't whales. They are the largest members of the same family that dolphins belong to.

I've put more deep thought into the phone name, and I think that calling it Motorola Shamu is as silly as calling it Motorola Free Willy.
