Motorola will NOT provide monthly security patches for the Z. Does that matter?

My God!!! What's up with this ars teknica website? First it was a downright hate and ridiculous review (even going as far as complaining about dumb things like carrier bloatware on a carrier phone) then came them bringing up security updates like its was some new sliced bread, and worse still, when news started coming that it was a lie, they climb up sorrow city to go fetch some more bad news to report about moto not offering security updates REGULARLY this time. I mean, What? What's next? That Motorola doesn't have a color option in green? even the verge wouldn't even stoop this low.

It seems they're deliberately working day and night to make sure that Motorola gets some bad press for something almost every other oem is guilty of.

Even going out of their way to report calamity after another calamity about moto.. Such a pathetic website tbh

A review is only valid if positive on a phone you like or own.

Eh Samsung has really stepped it up with security updates lately as well.

Yes - with US carrier models. Have they
stepped it up with other models?

Other than US unlocked models, they really seem to have stepped their game up with security updates, and updates in general.

That could be said for anything then. The masses don't care about amoled or shatter proof screens, wireless charging, app drawers, metal bodies...etc. etc.

Maybe not the masses but we phone nerds care. And the masses don't generally buy a new phone every year - unlike some of the phone junkies in these forums (yours truly included).

Here's something to remember about Motorola (and Ars' reviews of past Moto phones). Motorola, when they were under Google, made a name for themselves by offering a) a nearly untouched version of Android, b) customization, c) Nexus-like update speed, and d) bang-for-your-buck pricing. Ars reviewers loved these things, and often cited them as compelling reasons to pick up a Moto X over a Samsung Galaxy or LG G series despite Moto's shortcomings with cameras and the like.

So that brings us to the Z. We have a flagship phone with flagship performance (and a flagship price), but Lenovo is starting to stray from A, has limited B, and completely abandoned C and D. If those were big plusses to a reviewer in the past, I'd be more suspicious if they didn't call those changes out in a recent review.

Reviews are just informed opinions. Remember the words of The Dude:

"Well you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man."

Ars failed to give that historical context and so they just looked like they had an ax to grind.

It has been out for a couple weeks, lets not worry about patches and updates until it becomes an issue. Ars review seemed to be about the only real negative review I read and I was not able to see many of the issues he claimed. Its still fairly stock Android, not as customizable because, well, nearly stock android, no updates needed yet, and yes, I probably overpaid but I'm happy with it.
