I'm going on a trip to South America and i need to keep my kids entertained. I'm testing out playing movies on the Fascinate to see how many movies i can play before the battery dies. So far when i set the phone in airplane mode, i can play a 1.5hr movie ripped to the screen size of the phone at a fixed bitrate and lose 20% of the battery.

So basically the kids can watch 4-5 movies before a recharge. Pretty good!

I noticed the same thing when I watched a movie from Seattle to LA. If it's in airplane mode, it hardly uses any battery at all. Still, for your trip I would splurge for the spare batter/battery only charger combo. It's pretty darn cheap and will give you a backup if you need it.

Lucky for me my wife has the same phone through the BOGO offer. I have a backup whenever i need it :)

What is a good program to rip a dvd to playback on my phone. I have the Fascinate too. And what output should I use?

I second that question. Also, how much memory did each movie take up when you put them on your phone? And, how easy are they to remove when your done with them?

Thanks!!

Its funny how the screen and GPU are so much more efficient than the 3g radio and the browser. The battery test article that pegged the galaxy s phones at about 4.5 hours of typical browsing was pretty depressing but it must all be wasted by the baseband if you are saying you can get 6-8 hours out of it with multimedia and no network traffic... If I ever have some free time in the next 6 months i may try to test that theory.

I'm using the DVDFab Ripper to do this (however it is not free). I like the program because you can read DVD's/VOB's/ISO's whatever as the input. I'm just loading the built-in iphone profile they have, but i increase the screen size to better match our phone. It uses CUDA acceleration, so if you have an Nvidia GPU that supports it the decoding is pretty fast.

For a 1.5 hr movie, the total processing time is about 35min. and the filesize is around 1gig.
