This happens to me with a Moto G55, an Honor tablet, and an Honor Magic OS 8.0 smartphone. I select the developer options to allow data transfer mode when connecting the cable. But then it resets the settings. I also notice that it asks me to enter my fingerprint to enable data transfer mode every time, and I think that's the problem. For security reasons, it disables my preferences by default. What can I do? The cable I connect to the PC is short, and I prefer to connect it like a flash drive to transfer data directly.

Welcome to Android Central forums. I know this isn't what you're wanting to hear, it just confirms your findings. I looked this up and of course you're right it's all about security. It also said that these changes are "almost always" (not sure why they put it that way) temporary and will revert back, which is what you found. It went on to say that the notification panel is the easiest way, which is likely what you're already doing but here are those steps anyway.

How to use the notification panel for quick transfer
The quickest way to enable data transfer each time you connect your phone is to use the notification shade.

  1. Plug your phone into your PC with a USB cable.
  2. Unlock your phone with your fingerprint, PIN, or password.
  3. Swipe down from the top of the screen to open the notification panel.
  4. You will see a notification from the "Android System" saying "Charging this device via USB" or something similar.
  5. Tap the notification to expand the USB options.
  6. Select File Transfer or MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) from the menu.
I was thinking a cheap cable that's a little longer might be the answer. Big Lots or one of the "Dollar" places is where I go. I'm cheap and they work, what can I say. Dollar General and Family Dollar both have 10' cords for ~$7 where I live, not that you would need that length, but there are tons of places to get inexpensive data cables.

Let us know if those were the steps you were already taking or if it helped.
