multiple notifications for email?

When I receive an email, my regular notification sound goes off. If I do not check the message, within a little while, the notification will sound again. Now if I hear 6 notifications in a time period, I think I will find 6 emails, but often there are only 1 or so. So apparently it is notifying me of the same message if I do not check it.

How can I set it so that I am only given the audible notification once per email?

I only get 1 notification per message and have no idea how to even increase that. You might want to try just switching the notification sound and maybe that will change it back to one ring per message.
