So my brother got a 6P, doesn't want a Google play music subscription, but wants to put music in his phone. Any recommendations on which ones to use for the nexus 6p so he can have his music directly on his phone? Streaming isn't an option

Just to clear any confusion, you can still use Google Play Music without a streaming subscription. Just have him put his music on his 6P, and use GPM to listen (like a normal music player).

You can also use Google Play Music to stream music with ads, if he'd like. Google Play Music All Access gets rid of the ads for streaming and you get YouTube Red

If he just wants to play local files Poweramp https://forums.androidcentral.com/e...ails?id=com.maxmpz.audioplayer&token=zgZu-Uhr is a well-known app. VLC https://forums.androidcentral.com/e...ps/details?id=org.videolan.vlc&token=LGPbIkkB is another player that's used a lot for video but also supports music.

Another vote for Poweramp. It brings out the best in the 6P. We all know that the 6P isn't the best music player ( Lack of volume output, no DAC chip ). Poweramp, with its excellent audio boosting settings does a very good job with your onboard music files in my opinion. I'm using the 6P with an inexpensive pair of soundmagic e10m's and I've got no complaints with the sound quality of my music.

All kinds of opinions! Poweramp is very good, I've used a few others also but finally settled on Neutron, a great player. Poweramp is a very close second for me.

I use GPM with no subscription. All my music comes from YouTube files that I converted to MP3 format using converter software, then uploaded via the computer. The files are synced to the app on the phone for streaming, with no ads.
