I'm wondering what is the simplest and most efficient way to operate my samsung phone like an mp3 player. I'd like to play walking music, classical, like Mozart in the morning for a walk without draining the phone.

The easiest way is to put your MP3 files on the phone (internal storage or SD card) then use a music player to play it. No downloading/streaming needed. Any app you run, including a music player, will consume battery power.

Welcome to Android Central! I agree with ManiacJoe. In addition, if this phone is also your actual day-to-day phone, you could also switch it to Airplane Mode (if you don't want to get calls while you're out for your walk).
