Hi folks,
This is a quick review of the new HTC EVO 3D's that my wife and I got last week. It is probably more useful to Android or EVO neebie's like me!
Straight out of the box they where easy to set up. We just put in the new sim cards (stayed with O2) and turned it on. It asked in the setup if we wanted to take our contacts from another phone via Bluetooth and gave the list of manufacturers and models. It was supposed to also copy SMS across but this didn't happen for us. To be honest it was no big deal for me.
Initial switch on took longer than I expected but now that it has been done a few times it boots up very quickly as you'd expect with the 1.2 dual core processor and 1GB of ram.
This is my first Android phone but I must say that I really like the HTC Sense skins. You have a choice of button colours and highlights loads to download. The weather on the first screen is very cool as is it's full screen widget. When it rains there is water drops on the screen and a wiper comes across and wipes it away. You can set to have 'live' wallpapers which mean you can have grass blowing, snow falling, current weather etc.
Apps wise it is streets ahead of the Blackberry. I have downloaded a lot of quality apps (a lot recommended in the sticky) that work really well. I particularly like the Endomondo app. As you know I've been suffering with a very bad back and it tracks your walk on Google Maps and shows on the phone or the computer the route you took, time of day it was, time you took, average and maximum speed, how many calories you burned and can show on a graph your altitude against your speed! Another cracker to Unified Remote which lets you remote control your laptop or PC. Other apps such as the Kindle app are great for reading.
3D camera - the main selling point. I have to say that in 3D mode it takes a while to adjust the viewing angle to get to the sweet spot but the picture then is really clear. The pictures that it takes is actually very good. The only thing about taking pictures in this mode is that there is no zoom feature although there is in 2D mode. In video mode it is hard to get the full 3D effect without planning the shot but it's a very cool feature none the less.
The screen resolution is 960x540 pixels and everything from the icons to films really look superb on it. You can manually adjust the screen brightness and to be honest I have mine at the halfway setting and it is still bright.
Battery life....emmm! Well lets just say that the day after I got it I managed to drain the battery from full to empty in 5 hours! It was completely my fault though as the screen was on full brightness and was never off the whole time between watching films, playing games and downloading apps as well as the live wallpapers. Now that I allow the phone out of my hand (!) I'm getting a full day even with fairly heavy use and it seems to be improving. After a week the battery is now charging to 100%, only went to 99 before.
All in all I'm really impressed with the phone, no regrets at all. It is a fantastic phone even without the 3D and with it becomes excellent.
As an added bonus I renewed my contract with CPW here in the UK but got a letter from O2 yesterday to say I was now going to be billed directly from them and the price on the letter is less than the deal I had done with CPW - result!
Thanks
Stevie
