I purchased the Samsung gear s3 watch the other day and it refuses to pair with my phone am I doing something wrong and can Thisbe rectified

Without knowing more about what, specifically, you are seeing during the failed pairing attempts, the best answer is to perform a factory-reset on the phone and then the watch.

The two do work together, as I had that configuration successfully implemented before upgrading my phone to the S8 Plus.

I agree with some of what afh3 said as far as needing more info. But before jumping straight to factory resetting your phone, I would reset the watch and start from scratch, following the directions included with the S3. I have a GS7 paired just fine with a Gear S3.
