My hisense sero 8 doesn't display correct fonts in apps

For example, if you read The New Yorker in google newsstand, the text normally displays in the distinctive New Yorker font, but on the Hisense Sero 8 it displays in a system font. I see the same thing occurring in the app from Harper's Magazine. In the Scribd reading app (now defunct) there were options for 5 different fonts but they all appear the same. Also, using FBReader, the font does not change.
