My individual contact notification tones disappeared after updating to Oreo?

I am absolutely livid over this. I have only purchased Samsung phones for the past 8 or 9 years. But after this ordeal and the visual voicemail being gone, I'm done. This is ridiculous!!

I'm pissed about this too! I just spoke to an agent and this was his response from Samsung...

Unfortunately yes, due to a bug on the update the option was removed from the phone, Samsung will release a next update pretty soon on the phone to fix the bugs and you will have the option to assign them again on the phone.

I hope that it's not a lie! I'm using textra message app right now until the problem is fixed! It's pretty good!

I really hope they bring this feature back ASAP!!! My Note just did an automatic update today and afterwards I no longer had the individual text tones. I'm not happy at all!

Also upset the message tones are gone! I can't see why they would purposely get rid of it. Google messages still has my custom notification tones saved from when I was using it before. I switched to the Samsung messages when I found out the messages pop up on the always on display plus the notification tones. I've never tried Textra I'm downloading it now to try as well until this is fixed.

I hate that they took this away!!! I just switched from iPhone and now I want to go back! So upset. I liked having individual tones so I knew if it was as an important person I had to answer right away! Ugh

That's exactly why I used it. I had a specific tone for my son. One for my parents. One for other significant individuals. It helped to prioritize.

Well, I received a "security update" on my phone today and still cannot assign individual notification tones, so if it is going to be put back in, it wasn't done with that update. This is extremely irritating.

I have just done the new system update and unfortunately the option of different notification sound for an individual contact is still missing.

Also most call recorting applications do not work with the new update

Security updates don't add features. That's just so your phone isn't vulnerable to the latest hacks or viruses.

Here is what I did to make custom notifications available again. Oreo now splits custom Notifications from Ringtones.

I created a Notifications directory on the Internal storage (same level you would see the Ringtones folder) and copied my custom notifications into that directory. I then restarted the phone (may not need to be done) and custom notifications were available in the Messages app.

This worked on my ATT Samsung S8 plus. Hope it helps!

NOTE: This only makes custom notifications available to apps and not individual contacts. (Will keep investigating!)

Is this for just the custom tone for the app or individual people/conversations? They want to be able to set a tone for individual people.

Sorry. I just got excited that I had the custom notifications I had before the update! Yes. I confirmed it only makes the notifications available to the apps and not individual contacts. I updated my post to add that.

Of all the things an Android smartphone should be able to do, excellent phone call and text message management is one of them.
Removing the ability to identify a caller or text message without having to look at the screen is a huge TAKEAWAY and should be seen as a debilitating bug.
For people driving in their cars to have to look at their phone when they receive a text, this can be a disaster in the making. For those of us with multiple priorities, the inability to determine who is calling without looking at the screen is, again, a major inconvenience and reduces our productivity.
Please consider adding your voice to this issue to empower those "decision makers" who broke it to put it back the way it was.

Good way to push people back to Apple! I relied on individual text message alerts to determine picking up my phone for my kids and pesky retail notifications. Why would you do this Samsung!!? Give a great feature then take it away on a software update. More like a software downgrade.
Disappointed.

WHY ARE THEY IN MY CONTACTS PERIOD!! AND TO REMOVE THIS PART!??!?!?!... Why not remove something else! I was hoping the 2nd oreo update would put back BUT NOPE!!! Thx Samsung for taking that away that I USED!!! Wtf

Mine did too...just got off the phone with a tech from AT&T and unfortunately its something Google changed when the update happened. I'm not happy with this change. The tech was very empathic and friendly. He took remote control of my phone and went through all the apps along with going online to Google so he stated that there's no patch right now to fix it but maybe in the next update. So frustrated 😡😡😡

Like many others I know personalized notifications was about the main reason I did not go to iphone. Iphone brought this feature much later. Textra is a solution but it is likely that it won't show up on the Samsung watch. I guess its time to say good bye to both

What a huge mistake! Being able to know who's texted without looking at your phone is a great, simple feature.

Please bring back this feature! This is impactful!

Now I have to wake up and grab my phone to know if it's a text from my kids, from emergency work contacts, or maybe just some spammer. REMOVING THIS WAS A MISTAKE!

I hate it! I have anxiety and the individual message tones for contacts helped ease my anxiety. I've had Galaxy since S5 Active went through the S6 not being waterproof, the S7 not having an IR blaster, the S8 doesn't have one either. NOW they're taking the message tones. 😐
