My iphone upgrade plan - will it work?

I currently have a feature (regular phone) with 16 months left on the contract. If I buy the iphone as an "upgrade" for this phone, Sprint is asking for $649, since I'm not eligible for the $199 price for a new line. My question is, what if I activate an iphone on a new line, then ask them to switch the phone #s assigned to each line? I can cancel my existing line for a $160 ETF (16 months x $10), so my total investment would be only $360 vs. $649 for an "official" upgrade.

Thoughts? Would this actually work?

You can, but you have to leave both lines open for at least 30 days or you don't get your mail in rebate. So your total investment includes the first month's bill as well - depending on how you set it up, it could be somewhere between $50 and $150.

Ok my bad. I haven't looked because i'm not interested in the iphone but that's how it works for any other phone.

Sprint might have a policy where you would have to wait for aa certain amount of time before requesting your old number back. I know at T-Mobile it's 60 days so you might want to check into that.
