For the Shield, with 9.2.1 being the big update teased for 2 years, this is very most likely, definitely the final update, it's resting place, Android 11.

I saw but can't verify that some apps require Android 12 now. How long will our Shields be viable in terms of streaming support? I told my parents "I'm tired of fixing the FireSticks and smashing them with a 'expletive-F' hammer." I was done with them in my home and am beyond fed up for parents.

My options are Shield or Google Streamer. Shield is amazing but as stated resting on Android 11, Streamer, is well, Google.. barely a step above Amazon but at least on a platform with app future proofing even if when Google abandons it.

Specially when you’re the go-to tech support for the family. The NVIDIA Shield has been a rock-solid streaming device for years, and while Android 11 (with the 9.2.1 update) might be its final stop, it’s still incredibly capable today. However, you're right—app developers are slowly shifting toward Android 12+, and that could limit Shield’s streaming compatibility in the near future.

On the other hand, the Google TV/Streamer isn’t as refined performance-wise, but being on a more current Android base does offer a bit of future-proofing, at least for app support. It's the safer long-term bet, though it may not match Shield’s raw performance or reliability just yet.

If you're switching platforms or want to preserve your playlists across devices and streaming apps, "MusConv" is a huge help. You can use it to transfer your entire music library and playlists from one platform (like Spotify or YouTube Music) to another, ensuring no headaches when switching to a new streaming environment—especially useful when moving between Android TV systems.

TL;DR: Shield is still amazing but aging; Google TV is future-proof but less refined. Use "MusConv" to make any transition smoother, especially if you're moving your music setup too.

I went with the Streamers which I'll get to why.

You nailed it with less refined. There are far fewer options as it's aimed at user-friendliness, one option that is stupid is no screensaver adjustment which I fixed with ADB. It heavily relies on CEC, as such the remote can only turn on one device? Dumb. Interface feels, I use again, less refined. Options feel unorganized.
Overall though I think it's what I needed. USB-C power, Ethernet. Very smooth interface. Snappy apps. I honestly think it's faster than the Shield.

I skipped the Shields for a few reasons. First, the above concern about long-term support. Second, I needed two and forgot how expensive the tubes are, Pros obviously out of the question. Three, I'd have to hardware modify both tubes, didn't feel like that.

Overall, the streamers are overpriced but were the next best thing. Disappointed the Shields weren't viable in this circumstance but am impressed for what it is with the alternative.
