My new Nexus 7 has issues downloading app updates from Play Store

Hi folks.

Just picked up a Nexus 7 and after the initial setup, it started to download app updates from the Play Store (updates to the Google apps that are pre-installed), and the thing basically isn't downloading them. Well, more precisely, it's downloading them very, very, very, very slowly (as in, download bar in the store goes from 15kb, then holds for 60-120 seconds, then to 35kb, then holds again, and so on -- very, very slow). I have very fast internet, and my HTC One is not having similar issues (just updated a slew of apps on it with no problem). I reset the router, rebooted the device, deleted and re-added my Google account. Still the same issue.

Is this a known issue or a device-specific problem (i.e., I have a bad unit)?

Is it just an issue with downloading apps, or is WiFi slow all the time? If it is the latter, you should check out the "slow wifi" thread. It contains instructions on how to check your back cover to ensure your antennas are properly connected.

Thanks. I checked that thread and checked the back of the device -- everything seems to be fine.

In the meantime I turned it off for a while and let it charge a bit while I was Googling around to see what I could do. When I turned it back on, it appears to now be working properly, at least for the time being, because the 4.2.2 update downloaded immediately, and after it installed, the rest of the apps were updating at normal speeds. Hopefully the issue is resolved. If it pops back up again, I'll pop in again.

Thanks again.

Try downloading your apps and updates manually, one at a time. I've got an S3, an N7 and a Transformer TF300T, and I usually stop the auto updates on all three. It takes a few minutes longer if there's more than one or two, but they load faster than if they download all at once. Also remember that updating often takes a fraction of the time it does to download an entire app, since you're only updating parts of what's already there.
