My Nexus 7 is frozen at the lock screen, how do I get past here?

my nexus 7 is frozen at the lock screen

my nexus 7 is frozen at the lock screen and i dont know why or what to do to unfreeze it. i was using it earlier today and it seemed to be working fine. then tonight i turned it on, it said 8:34 and had a couple updates, i swiped at the screen to open it and it wouldnt respond. i tried a few more times and nothing. then i realized it was the wrong time the real time was almost 9pm but nexus screen said 8:34, i tried plugging it in to charge it and the battery icon doesnt change to the charging one. i have since checked it and it is still frozen with the same time and battery the same, doesnt show that the battery is getting lower. how do i unfreeze it? all i can do is turn it on and off with the power button

When you turn it off with the power button are you holding the button until it reboots? If not, try that. It will seem to take forever but it's really just a minute or so.
