I had the dreaded "Stuck on Google screen" problem that many have been having. Asus told me it would be over $200 to fix. I fixed it myself. Sadly, there's no magic cure that I know of - I ordered a used, working 16gb motherboard for less than $40 from a seller on Amazon and replaced it myself. I though others might like to know that there's no special procedure if you want to do this, just swap the motherboard (it's the board with the headphone jack on it.) I had previously planned to buy a 32gb N7 with cracked screen from ebay, but it was gone by the time I decided to pull the trigger.

I'm still hoping that Google/Asus will do something about all of this, and I can go back to my 32gb motherboard.

Well done! Did you follow a YouTube video on how to do it?

No, I'd previously referred to the iFixit notes when I replaced the glass on someone elses' Nexus 7, so I already was familiar with the innards. Just used 3 guitar picks to pop the back off, and a precision screwdriver. The motherboard is really a pretty easy replacement, though the trim around the screen is kind of fragile, so 3 of 4 corners are missing a tiny chunk of plastic. But it works flawlessly.

This is great for those that know how to do that, but what about the rest of us. I have a nexus 7 2012 32gb. It has acted up for so long I am really tired of it. I loved this tablet, but I think it has seen it's day. Now I don't know what to buy. It I get another nexus 7 it comes with kitkat and it will update and I am right back here. Do I get a nexus 9, bigger then I want, but... Or is there another android out there that is a better choice for me. I need someone to help me with this, please!!!

Been considering this myself. Thanks for the update - inspires me to do it as well.

One question - I have a 32gb wifi N7 but finding a replacement motherboard for 32gb is really difficult. Any ideas if it would work if I swapped it with a 16gb motherboard?

Any help is appreciated.

That's exactly what I did - the only 32gb boards available at the time were FAR more expensive. The 16gb was pretty cheap, so I got it, and had no issues at all.
