My one-month old Xoom has died

I rooted mine last night, which does a hard reset because it wipes everything, and I am still having the issue with only minimal apps installed.

Yeah, the ones I mentioned in post #17:

Astro
Cover Art Downloader
Dropbox
Google Reader
iMdb
OSMonitor
Speed Test

Get alogcat from the market, it's an app that'll read the log of what's happening on your Xoom and it'll let you see what apps are doing what. Though it doesn't always right the last info before a reboot. So you can try:

(from command prompt that you used to root)

adb bugreport

- I haven't done this myself, just read here: android - Can I get logcat logs after phone reboots? - Stack Overflow

Because those "reps" at Verizon stores or any other electronic stores don't know these things. They only know the power button. With electronics of that kind, forums like these are the only ones that know ins and outs of devices. Never rely on store reps, always go to forums..

which is why they so good at selling Idevices. They all dummies

So an update on mine - ever since uninstalling Astro it has not locked up once. I have not changed any other settings or uninstalled anything else. So now the question is, is the issue with Astro, or is it one of the apis it uses like the one that prevents the Xoom from sleeping?

This is a good topic. It should be talked about more to identify the culprint of this problem.

You can learn far more about most any android device from these forums, then you'd ever be able to learn from either store reps at a Verizon store, or their telephone tech support.

In my opinion those folks are some of the most uninformed people in the world. That is due in no small part to Verizon not providing them with what I believe is not only good information about these products, but necessary information.

I also have Astro installed, and have had it installed since Feb 28, but have only had the one instance of the Xoom "locking up"

One thing that still bothers me is that when it appeared to have died, my Xoom also seemed to not be charging (indicator at center bottom not lit) with either the plug-in or the external contacts on the dock.

I think that if it had appeared to at least be charging, I would have been encouraged to continue to try different approaches to getting it working. But, as it seemed unable to charge, I feared that something more catastrophic had occurred than some sort of "lock up" that merely required a "Forced Reboot" (page 52 of the PDF manual proscribes such a reboot for a system that in non-responsive - but, at least to me, seems to be describing a unit that is frozen, but still displaying on the screen).

Checking in to say that I still have not had the issue since uninstalling astro. Will probably reinstall soon and see if it comes back.

My wife DIDN'T have Astro installed when hers died...

If I had to guess, it's not astro itself, but one of the functions or apis that it uses. If you look at Astro's permissions, you will see that one of them is to prevent the device from sleeping. My best guess would be that permission, but that is simply a guess.
