My phone lags so much, the system says it stopped responding and asks if I want to wait or quit

Recently, pretty much anything I do takes 10 or more seconds to load up. A screen pops up that asks me if I want to wait, quit, or report. I choose wait and a few seconds the app or whatever I was doing loads up. Sometimes it won't even show who is calling until the 5th ring. Not sure what's going on!

My internal storage has 16 or 24 GB used.
Android version 7.0 (it's lagged before and after updates)

Do you have any suggestions?

Usual "quick" fixes are not - while full on long thorough most likely to return phone to working properly.

Got backups? But don't restore as when you reset you want to set it up as a new phone.

There is always a chance for corrupt cache, files or system. Or failed storage device.

Assuming you have 32GB installed. Are any apps etc on an SD card? Higher chance for failure.

When it started and what changed or apps installed? Screen flooded with ads even.
