I have a notification sound I get quite often without a notification appearing in the notification area of my screen. I know it isn't my emails because I have those sounds turned off. It also is not the sound l get for tweets or Facebook or messages from Facebook. I can't figure it out but would like to turn it off. Any suggestions how to figure it out? It's driving me crazy. Thanks!

Check the list of running apps in Settings is all I can suggest.
Check for recently installed apps.

I've had one or two such incidents myself in the past, so I went thru each app, and set the notification ring tone to something different for each one. It turned out to be an email app, (K-9) where I had notification bar settings set to not show message subjects.

Thanks for the suggestion, I think it is the yahoo mail app. I use the HTC built in one but had installed yahoo mail which I use on occasion. Had notifications turned off so didn't get duplicates notification, but think sound for notifications was still on.

Ah that explains it.

You definitely don't want to get mail from the same email address with 2 different applications. I would recommend removing the account entirely from 1 of those applications.

Especially for pop 3 account because you're never sure which app is going to pick up the mail or where it went.
