myTouch 4G or G2?

Interesting photo.... why does the MT4G look so washed out there? Was it in direct light more or the camera flash? I didn't notice anything like this in person...but I was primarily looking at the interface and not photos/etc..

Were all display settings optimized in whatever way you could? Could you possible post another side by side with each device (G2, MT4G) displaying the same photo? If the difference is that great...I may reconsider my purchase before it's too late.

ok, this is the exact same photo shown with the gallery on each phone:

I don't really notice it unless looking at photos though. With the default backdrops it doesn't look particularly washed out.

Very good comparison shots...haven't seen any like this before - very useful in my opinion. If you don't mind, could you either post a link to the source image or email a copy to fredmr@gmail.com? Would help give us an idea of whether or not the other phones are over-saturating the image or if the MT4G display really is washed out.

Picture quality at first glance is often judged by how vivid an image looks. Kinda taking the idea of TV displays in stores.. they are set to the most vivid settings since that is what initially attracts our eyes, but not much detail can be seen. When you set a TV up in your home..you calibrate it to see true colors and detail by adjusting brightness/contrast or using a THX setting mode. The last photo you took with all three phones -- the distant trees/shadows appear a little more detailed on the MyTouch Vs the G2. Guess it all really depends on the source image though.

This video illustrates to the extreme what I'm talking about: YouTube - Why Calibrate Video?

I'll redo the photos after I find a color calibration target. The picture in the backdrop itself is my girlfriend who I don't know wants to become a internet color calibration target ;)

haha - I kinda thought so. May want to delete the previous photos in this thread in that case since this thread is bound to get many more views in the coming days.

Perhaps silly but here's a different question related to the subject. I have a Samsung Vibrant. Would anyone make a switch to MyTouch 4G?
From the photos submitted above, the Vibrant appears to be the crispest!

The Vibrant isn't a bad phone too, but at least as coming from the factory (no lagfix) the phone is not very fast compared to either the G2 or MyTouch. The Vibrant is a regular HSDPA device, it doesn't support the HSPA+ categories so if theoretical downlink speeds are important to you, the G2 or MyTouch is a better choice.

I've seen other comparisons from other reviews and I always seem to see more detail in the MT4G. I'd rather have a phone displaying more true colors and have better brightness/contrast ratio than something purely vivid. The one thing I haven't yet seen in a review is the source image for comparison. It could be that the screen on the mytouch really just isn't as good...but maybe its a more true image. We'll see eventually.

I would also choose the mt4g or g2 over the vibrant any day due to build quality...or at least the feeling of better build quality.

I actually went to the store again this afternoon. Took a look last night for the first time and followed up today. Busted out my own G2 next to the MT4G and the screen and stock Android on the G2 is SO much nicer - IMHO - than the MT4G. The color on the MT4G seems washed out, not as crisp. It was a really big difference, and in fact, a dealbreaker for me. I would definitely go (or in my case STAY) G2!

I've been looking at other reviews that show the MyTouch, and G2 screen shot comparisons. They loaded a web page in these examples... as a baseline, I loaded the same webpage and looked at the same content on my computer. Not sure what this means really because of course...it could be all my monitors are not as great of quality as the G2s screen depends on camera they used to photo the phones...etc...

Hopefully someone can perform a better test than this. In the photo below, the top left image is the MT4G, the top right image is the G2, and the bottom image was what I saw on my computer. Used a screen print to capture them all. Take it for whatever it's worth to you. I suppose even IF the MT4G was closer to true colors...that doesn't necessarily make it a better screen. More vivid content is probably preferred for 90% of the things we do on phones anyway...but when it comes to detail in photos or movies, it's possible the MT4G has the edge. Look at the shadows/darker areas in the G2 photo vs the MT.. I just wouldn't call the MT4G screen a dealbreaker just yet.

G2 at Costco

I went to T-mo to ask about the differences between the MT4G and G2. They showed me both, and it looks to me like the big items are:

hard keyboard
UI
FF Camera

The salesman loved his G2 KB. He also mentined that the UI on the G2 was closer to stock Android, which he said was more likely to get the next version before the more Sense-like 4G. As for the camera, the video-phone apps are not really ready for prime time right now, maybe by mid-2011 they should be much better. If you can live without the FF camera, and like the hard keyboard, you can get a hell of a deal at Costco right now.

I headed down to Costco and the rep at the Mobile Phone booth said the deal for the G2 is good through Sunday 11/7: $49.99 plus tax (tax on full $449 value) and this inlcudes a freebie case and bluetooth headset, as well as free activiation for new contracts.

That did it for me, I will be buying on Sat 11/6. Sacramento has HSPA+, so give me a couple of weeks to get comfortable with it and I'll post some comments.

Didn't see any thumbnails attached. Can you please try reposting?

Thanks!

(top left MT, top right G2, as seen on computer monitor on bottom)

Tried re-attaching and also put a link there. If none of this works I'll try another method later.

EDIT: Please let me know what you guys think about all this... I'm curious if anyone else is seeing what I am, or if I'm just crazy.

I honestly don't see too strong a difference or any difference at all when it comes to camera quality in the 4G. I took a few shots yesterday n they looked just as nice as the shots my Slide would think. I'm with you; I think your print out is more accurate. I'll try taking some more when I get back from church n post them. Was busy yesterday!

valeuche - I was thinking about this thread and your post #40 the other day, and how you were right to call out the MT4Gs display.

Did you end up keeping the original screen or try exchanging for a "better" one?

I kept it. With some kinds of photos and backdrops I think it looks much better than the G2 even, it just took some time too get used to it. Bright scenes do seem a but washed out, but the advantage is better shadow detail in dark scenes.

Agreed - that was the brightness/contrast point I was trying to make to others before in this thread. I think the "bad" screen may have better brightness/contrast levels dead on - though the "good" screen has better color accuracy. The color accuracy is difficult to notice though while viewing details in shadows is easy to notice...so each individual will have their preferences.
