At random times, random icons (shortcuts, I guess) appear on the home screen. For some reason, Angry Birds RIO lives to the right of G mail.

Screen to the left was full of icons top and bottom, yet some are missing. Yet none are missing in the icon tray.

Is there logic behind what gets placed and where?

Are you asking about the logic when you boot up your device for the VERY FIRST time??? Then, I'd have to say it's an HTC Sense thing... but after that it's totally up to you... if you want to move something once, twice, three times it will be in the last place you put it... these will not move around randomly unless you move them.

I hope this answers your question. If not, let us know.

Oh, so I can inadvertently slide them from screen to screen?

Inadvertently... maybe, but it's a little hard... you have to hold down on the icon for a second or two, then you usually feel a vibrate and you can drag it from screen to screen... but that usually pretty obvious.

However, if you do change themes they can change depending on the theme.

If you are in the icon tray and hold down on an icon too long, you will also feel a vibration and the screen will snap to your home screen (desktop, as you called it) so you can place the icon on the home screen. Have you ever done that before? Maybe by accident?

That could be the case. Now, how does one make them go away? Folders?

That's it. App & icon organization 4 dummies. :)

Hold down the icon or folder for a second or two and you will feel it vibrate... then look at the bottom tray... one will appear as a trash can... drag the icon down to the trash can and let go of it... it will be gone then.
