N5 issues after a year of use.

I've had my N5 for around a year now and its starting to slow down and lag. Some of the apps take forever to load when they use to just start. The hangouts app takes a long time to load the thread and it crashes sometimes. Its not the only one though. The google apps just don't seem to work like they use to without any problems. I'm running 5.0.2. I have done the "wipe cache partition" multiple times. I have over 8 GB of memory available. I don't have any music in my phone and all my pictures except maybe 30 are all in Drive. Is there anything I can do to get my phone running again like it use to it is it time to start saving for a new phone?

Well, why don't you try installing some junk file cleaner apps from the market sometimes its the junk files that makes the device running slow, so try doing that at first and later if you still find that its laggy and all then I would advise your to backup all your data and perform a complete factory reset !

I'd try a factory reset. Normally solves a lot of issues.

Since you indicated you are on 5.0.2, I assume you are running a custom ROM. If so, you may need to ask that ROM developer, or look at the support thread for that ROM.

If you were on the stock ROM (5.0 or 5.0.1), I would second the factory reset suggestion by Jnorton2724 (especially if you got to Lollipop via OTA). A lot of users have indicated that a factory reset helped solve a bunch of issues after OTA.

I did a factory reset after upgrading to 5.0 but not 5.0.1..... I noticed improvement after resetting after 5.0 but since 5.0.1 a lot of my problems have retuned. I didn't think I would need to do a FR for such a small update. Its getting quite annoying to have to wipe my phone after every update from google. The screen on time has made the phone almost unusable without a charger nearby.

Use a custom rom. Battery life is way better and you get some nice enhancements. Resurrection Remix is running great for me.

This is actually my first android device and I know nothing about rooting or custom Roms...

The factory reset was recommended for update to Lollipop (5.x) from Kitkat (4.4). If you updated to 5.0.1 from 5.0, you are right, a factory reset shouldn't be required.
What exactly is the issue currently? I know you indicated that screen on time is bad - how bad? If possible, can you do the following?

1. Charge phone to 100%
2. Reboot
3. Use phone till end of day (or whenever your battery is too low)
4. Go to settings/battery - take screen print. Tap on Graph at the top, take screen print. Go back to battery stats page, and scroll down to see the top 3-4 battery drains - tap on each one (top 3-4) individually, and take screen prints

Share these screen prints here, and maybe we can figure out what's going on.

XDA Developers has everything you need to know. It will seem daunting at first, but most people get through it no problems if you take your time and follow directions. Lollipop updates has its issues and over time with usage there are junk files created that can reduce the available space. Installing custom ROMs is a better soln to your problem.

Pick a custom ROM, and I'll bet you there are issues with it too. (Any source on these "junk files" that the stock Android update creates?)
