Is there a way to get the native Android Mail and Calendar apps instead of using HTC Sense versions of these?

Only if you disable sense and use Launcher for example

Menu > Settings > Applications > HTC Sense > Clear defaults

Press home and select Launcher.

I've been wanting the default calendar app too since day 1. Disabling the Sense launcher only changes the launcher but you still are stuck with HTC's apps. I can't find anyone that will tell me how to do this exactly. I'm pretty sure you have to get the app out of a standard Android ROM and install somehow.

To get native calender go to widgets and select google calender, I prefer HTC but that personally.

Root and flash a custom rom with them. There are plenty that have the asop look. All of them are fully functional except froyo which needs some work for the camera.

The performance gains alone are worth it much less the ability to run different software at a whim.
