Is it possible android might start supporting GIFS natively soon? Without apps

No, it's a proprietary format.

I couldn't even get it play animated png, which is open source, that's really is the only hope.

Not sure what you mean. I can view an attached .gif file in the gmail app. I can also save it and view it with the stock Gallery app.

He probably mean animated gif. I'm surprised native gallery app doesn't support animated png though.

I emailed myself a .gif file and it displayed in gmail. I also chose to save it in the download app/folder and then opend it from there choosing the gallery as the app to open it.
 
Use photos.
The Google+ photos not gallery plays them
